What APX offers
***
5 years ago I decided I wanted to advance my personal training career and take it to the next level. I realised that there was so much more to learn and areas to grow.
***
My degree in Osteopathy has provided an incredible insight into the intricacies of human movement and how to maximise joint function. It’s given me a huge appreciation of how we really move and what the body requires.
***
I love hands on treatment. It’s an amazing way of getting in to a flow state and listening to someone’s body. However so many common ailments can be addressed through more astute training methods in the gym. This is what APX Education is about; working with your body instead of against it.
***
So whether you’re a personal trainer or any form of therapist, make sure you keep an eye out for the APX practical workshop days. It will change your perspective on training and provide directly applicable ways of getting patients and clients to move better with load.

The biggest mistake I see in people’s training regime is simply a lack of foundational strength.
***
This is;
- Diaphragmatic breathing
- Foot strength/mobility
- Grip strength
- Spinal mobility
***
Your ability to move well and therefore lift weights without pain is based on the quality in these areas. Ignore them and the chance of developing an injury increases.
***
Some of it is about patience, the other is about awareness. The most important thing though is that you start practicing these components.
***
If you’re unsure on how to integrate these in to your plan then just drop me a message

Treatment addresses the symptom, education addresses the cause
***
Soft tissue treatment, in most formats, will have a positive effect on the body. Improving joint mechanics, increasing blood flow, stimulating lymphatic drainage; it all plays a part in optimising an individual’s health.
***
This being said, education on the reason as to why someone is suffering with an issue is imperative. It is the identification and action plan which is more valuable than the acute short term solution.
***
Stress, nutrition, lifestyle and training methods are all contributing factors. It’s the practitioners job to identify which (if not all) that need addressing and providing an action plan.
***
Remember that pain and illness is an indication of a lack of alignment, blockage in energy and improper nutrition. If you never address these, or are never educated on how to address these, you’ll struggle to achieve the optimum health you deserve.

This is a concept I explain to a lot of my patients
***
The main principle of Osteopathy is the body working as one unit. Therefore a break in the chain somewhere is a break in the chain everywhere.
***
Going to the site of pain is important as it allows you to obtain a diagnosis. The diagnosis will indicate what action to take based upon where the injury is up to in terms of healing. However…
***
Long term health is achieved through finding the root cause. This is more often than not a distal structure which isn’t functioning properly. Sometimes it’s above or below the pain, other times it’s in a place you’ve never thought of.
***
The take home point is that broken wrist you had when you were 7 or the ankle you went over playing football 10 years ago all adds up. It contributes to the big picture.
***
Wellness is achieved through evenly distributed fluid movement. This comes via assessing the whole body and not just where it hurts.

Not getting better from your injury? Consider this…
***
Passive treatment is 100% an effective way of helping someone heal. Therapists can help alleviate stress and strain on a joint by whichever way they see fit. Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Acupuncture etc; it’s all good and all has it’s place.
***
However a passive treatment table cannot recreate the same stresses and strains on the body as the environment in which the injury was sustained.
***
The joints require the same amount of length tension and the body must be resisting gravity in the same way. Our job a therapists is to identify the pattern, safely select what load is appropriate and teach the patient how to get in and out of the situation.
***
At APX we use passive treatment as part of our model, but this is only one component. We don’t just want our patients to get better, we want them to become stronger, fitter and more confident in themselves when it comes to doing the activity they love again.

I came across this quote last week and it really resonated with me.

The reason being is that it reiterates manual therapy as a skill set rather than just academic learning. It takes time and practice to master your craft.

That’s what excites me about my job, the opportunity to continually get better and better at something.

You can’t rush experience, it has to be earned. I’m 5 years into practicing as a therapist now and am fully aware of my strengths and weaknesses.

However nothing will get you better at what you do than hands on experience in the trenches, reflection on your performance and constantly striving to improve.

APX isn’t just about treatment, it’s about education.
***
It’s about understanding your diagnosis, what you can do about it and how you can change your lifestyle to support recovery.
***
We guide and support. We want patients to feel assured that they can take control of their injury through their own hard work.
***
Whether it be through podcasts, YouTube videos or training programmes, APX will provide you with all the content you need to get back to doing what you love.

At APX treatments we want to ensure that all our patients are given the holistic support necessary to achieve optimal health and wellness.
***
As nutrition plays a huge role in recovery, supplementation can quite often be an effective way of boosting nutrient intake. This being said, knowing what to take can be challenging due to conflicting information.
***
Before giving patients any advice on supplementation we first want to ensure that a) the supplements suggested have sound evidence behind their consumption and b) come from a reputable company who produce a great product.
***
Turmeric is one of the most researched supplements to date and is a fantastic inclusion in your diet either in your cooking to taken additionally in capsules. When taken consistently, it is an excellent tool in improving joint health and managing the onset of Osteoarthritis
