A bulging disc (also called disc protrusion) occurs when the outer fibrous ring (annulus fibrosus) weakens and the inner gel-like core (nucleus pulposus) pushes outward—but does not rupture. Symptoms depend on location, size, and whether it presses on nerves. Many bulging discs are asymptomatic (found on MRI in ~30–50% of pain-free adults).

Chiropractic care can help provide symptom relief for many people with disc issues (like bulging or herniated discs).

🦴 Facet Joint Dysfunction: Our Bread and Butter Cases 🦴

Facet joints are small joints located between the vertebrae in your spine. They help guide and limit spinal movement, keeping your spine stable while allowing flexibility. When these joints become stiff, misaligned, or irritated, it’s called facet joint dysfunction — and it’s one of the most common causes of back or neck pain that we see in clinic.

What happens in facet joint dysfunction:

🚨The joint loses its normal range of motion
🚨Surrounding muscles may tighten to protect the area
🚨Nerve flow can be affected, which may influence muscle function, coordination, and even sensations in your limbs

How this can affect your health...

Facet joint dysfunction doesn’t just cause localised pain — it can contribute to:

🙅Arthritis progression by increasing stress on the joint
🙅Pain in nearby joints due to altered posture and movement
🙅Reduced nerve flow to muscles, affecting strength, coordination, and movement efficiency

How chiropractic helps:
A spinal adjustment restores normal motion to the affected facet joints, helping:

💪Reduce joint stiffness and pain
💪Improve nerve communication to surrounding muscles
💪Support overall spinal health and movement

💡 If you’re experiencing neck or back pain, stiffness, or unusual muscle tension, a professional assessment can pinpoint facet joint dysfunction and guide targeted care to restore your movement and comfort. Give us a call on 01724 871222 to book an assessment or visit us at www.chirohealth.co.uk

🧠 What Can Cause Poor Balance & Coordination?🧠

Balance and coordination are essential for everyday activities — from walking to picking up your child. When they're off, it can feel like your body isn't responding the way it should.

What’s happening beneath the surface?

Your muscles rely on a constant stream of information from your nervous system to move correctly. When nerve signals are disrupted — due to spinal misalignments, tension, or irritation — muscle function can suffer. This leads to:

😟Unsteady movements
😟Difficulty maintaining posture
😟Increased risk of falls

The science behind it:

Research shows that spinal adjustments can influence how your brain processes sensory and motor information. For example, a study found that after a spinal adjustment, the brain becomes better at integrating and responding to sensory input, leading to improved balance and coordination.
Dr. Erin Madonia

Another study demonstrated that spinal adjustments increased muscle activation in the legs, suggesting that chiropractic care can help your body recruit muscles more efficiently, enhancing stability and reducing injury risk.

Our job is to maintain a strong and healthy nervous system that promotes normal balance and coordination because this will:

😊Improve nerve communication to muscles
😊Enhance brain-body coordination
😊Support overall stability and movement

🧘‍♂️ Stress: Why Your Body Can’t Relax When It’s in Defense Mode 🧘‍♀️

Stress isn’t just in your head — it triggers real physical and physiological changes in your body. When you’re stressed, your nervous system goes into “defense mode,” releasing stress hormones, tensing muscles, and increasing heart rate. Your body simply cannot be repairing and relaxing, while stressed at the same time — it’s physiologically impossible.

Polyvagal research shows that the vagus nerve plays a key role in regulating stress and promoting relaxation. When the vagus nerve is functioning well, your body can move from a state of alertness into one of rest, repair, and recovery.

How chiropractic can help:

👍🏻Gentle spinal adjustments can influence nervous system function
👍🏻By improving spinal and joint alignment, chiropractic care can support vagal tone
👍🏻This helps your body transition out of “defense mode” and into relaxation and repair
👍🏻Combined with movement guidance and posture support, it can enhance your body’s natural ability to cope with stress

💡 If you’re constantly tense, fatigued, or struggling with stress, a professional chiropractic assessment can help identify areas where your body is overworked and guide strategies to support relaxation and recovery.
