🪖 Supporting Our Veterans

As part of our ongoing support for the military community, we are proud to share that our very own Gary Drane, who is also ex-military, is once again taking part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out this March, his third year supporting this incredible cause.

Every night, thousands of veterans across the UK face the harsh reality of sleeping rough. Gary will be spending the night outdoors with nothing but his sleeping bag and the cold to help raise funds and awareness for those who have served our country and now need our support.

All money raised goes directly to Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) helping to provide safe housing, mental health support, employment opportunities and a strong community for veterans.

As Gary says, “This isn’t just a fundraiser. It’s a statement that we don’t leave our veterans behind.”

Every pound counts. If you can donate even £1, it would make a real difference.

With Armistice Day and Remembrance Day fast approaching, we wanted to take a moment to recognise those who have served our country and the families who stand beside them.

At Ashby Funeral Care, we proudly support veterans and their families with care, respect and understanding. We know that arranging a funeral can be an emotional and difficult time, and for those with a connection to the Armed Forces, there may be financial support available to help ease that burden.

If you or a loved one has served, you may be eligible for help with funeral costs through dedicated service charities.

The RAF Benevolent Fund offers funeral cost grants for RAF veterans and their dependants. In cases of significant hardship, support of up to £5,000 may be available, along with help for headstones and funeral planning.

Other organisations providing vital support include:

💬 An Informational Message from Simon and the Ashby Funeral Care family.

As Funeral Director’s we regularly have open and honest conversations with families, of late, some of the shared stories have deeply saddened us.

Moral of the story: Greed will empower us all.

Some have told us that during their hour of need, when arranging a funeral and reception, certain “others” have added hidden costs to simple things like the booking of a buffet. These are not thousands of pounds, but a few hundred here and there, and often they are added quietly.

With funeral costs forever rising due to suppliers and local authorities, it is a shame to see the families paying more then required for a particular product or service.

For example, one family was told not to worry and that the buffet would be arranged for them. The cost was £12 per person for 50 guests. What they later found was that if they had booked direct with the venue or used a different company, the price would have been £9 per person. A £3 increase per person may not sound a lot, but that is £150 added through greed at one of the most vulnerable times in someone’s life.

To us, that is simply not right. It is dishonest, and it takes advantage of people when they are already struggling emotionally and financially. When they are trusting the chosen company to act in their best interests.

Adding a 33% commission to catering costs is simply and morally wrong which leads to the question, why are you paying a professional fee and what does this actually cover ?

At Ashby Funeral Care, we believe in complete honesty, transparency and fairness.

We know funerals are a business, but they are also deeply personal. Families place their trust in us and that trust means everything.

If this post makes others reflect, then perhaps it has done some good. Sometimes we just need to speak up for what we feel is morally right.

✨ Quick update: unfortunately Alfie did not win his category of Young and Inspiring Employee, but we all had a fantastic evening.

In true Alfie Taylor spirit he said, “You never lose, you only learn.”

At just 17, Alfie is keen to continue building, learning, and supporting the community. That mindset is inspiring and something we are very proud of.

As a company, we are honoured to have had a finalist in the first North Lincolnshire Big Small Awards. A huge thank you to the organisers E-Factor & The Business Hive, (main) sponsors Rands Solicitors and providers of the event for such a lovely evening.
