The combination of healing bodywork in the great outdoors is magical. Tuning in with the elements, whether its the deep heat from a real wood fire, traces of wood smoke lingering on the summer breeze, or the feel underfoot as you step out of your tent on to the earth. For me, the water element at Bulstone Springs is what makes it so special - I'll never forget my first glass of crystalline water drawn at source from this beautiful Jurassic coastal retreat. Its pure and beautiful and makes you feel brand new! I'm so happy to hear that everything is ready for summer, and am looking forward to offering holistic massage treatments in their beautiful bell tent again. X

We are drowning in berries here at the cottage. The soft fruit bushes are planted downstream of our natural compost boxes, so they get fertilised consistantly throughout the year with the rainfall. I don't worry about bird nets or fruit cages - there's plenty enough for all of us and I love watching feisty little birds take on plump rasberries that are at least half their body weight. Meanwhile, the kitchen has turned into a mini jam and syrup making plant - watching sugar melt into rich fragrant fairy elixirs of crimson takes me to another world...

Its Lavender (lavandula angustifolia) season. These precious flowers are on the brink of bursting open to release their soothing purple zen across the land. The time to harvest is now - as the unopened buds are full of essential oils and at the peak of their potency. I like to leave plenty of flowers back to blossom for the bees so they can enjoy their purple zen temples too. Lavender infused oil makes a wonderful soothing and relaxing body oil which is great for soothing sunburns and irritated skin. Here's how I make mine:

Harvest flowers and allow to dry using a dehydrator or oven at a maximum temperature of 35 degrees for approx 4-5 hours. Alternatively hang upside down in a dark place for 2-4 weeks. Check moisture content regularly with fingers to ensure that the buds are completely moisture free. Once dry, separate the buds from the stems.

You will need a ratio of 20:80% lavender flowers to oil. For example if you have a 500g jar, you will need 100g of lavender and 400g of oil (I use organic olive oil)

Ensure your jar is clean and add the lavender flowers and oil (you may need to use a pestle to push them down). Close the lid and store jar in a cool place away from sunlight for up to 4-6 weeks. Agitate regularly. This is known as cold infusion. I do not recommend solar infusion methods as UV light rapidly degrades oils.

Strain using oil filter paper or a clean dry muslin cloth and decant into a clean bottle. Store in a cool dark place using the best before date of your chosen oil as a guideline for shelf life.

When ready to use, you can blend you lavender infusion with other skin friendly oils such as sweet almond or jojoba till you achieve your desired consistency and strength. Enjoy....
