🧠 Myth-Busting Monday

❌ “You always need to see a GP for a cold.”

Most colds improve on their own within 7–10 days.

You can usually manage symptoms at home with:
• Rest
• Plenty of fluids
• Paracetamol or ibuprofen (if suitable for you)
• Advice from your local pharmacist

Book an appointment if:
• Symptoms last more than 3 weeks
• You have chest pain or difficulty breathing
• You have a high temperature that isn’t improving
• You feel significantly worse rather than better

Pharmacists are highly trained and can advise on many minor illnesses without the need for a GP appointment.

💗 Cervical Screening Reminder

If you’ve received a cervical screening invitation, please don’t ignore it.

Cervical screening helps prevent cervical cancer by detecting changes before they become serious.

Screening is offered through the National Health Service to women and people with a cervix aged 25–64.

The test:
• Usually takes around 5 minutes
• Is done by a trained nurse
• Can prevent most cervical cancers

If you’re overdue, please contact the practice to book.

🧠 Myth-Busting Monday

❌ “Antibiotics treat colds and flu.”

Colds, flu and most sore throats are caused by viruses — and antibiotics do not work against viruses.

Taking antibiotics when they aren’t needed:
• Won’t help you recover faster
• Can cause side effects
• Contributes to antibiotic resistance (making infections harder to treat in the future)

Antibiotics are only effective against certain bacterial infections, such as some chest infections, UTIs, and skin infections.

If you’re unsure whether you need treatment, speak to your GP or local pharmacist for advice.

Guidance from the National Health Service supports careful antibiotic use to protect everyone’s health.

💛 Eating Disorders Awareness Week 💛

This week we’re recognising Eating Disorders Awareness Week — a time to support those affected by eating disorders and help break the stigma around them.

Eating disorders can affect people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. Recovery is possible, and every conversation, act of understanding, and moment of support matters. If you or someone you care about is struggling, you’re not alone.

🌟 Meet the Team Tuesday! 🌟

This week we’re introducing Adam, who has been a valued part of the Beech Tree Surgery team for almost 10 years 👏

Adam originally started out in our Admin Team and has since moved into his current role as Business Intelligence Co-ordinator. In this role, he helps ensure we’re following the QOF (Quality and Outcomes Framework) and supporting good practice across the surgery. A big part of Adam’s work focuses on medication safety, quality improvement, and making sure our clinicians have the right data to provide the best possible care — especially for patients with long-term conditions.

When he’s not busy running reports and checks, Adam spends his spare time playing with his dog 🐶 and hiking in the Lake District fells ⛰️.

Thanks for all you do, Adam! 💚

Since moving into primary care a few years ago, Natalie has developed a special interest in respiratory management, supporting patients with conditions such as Asthma, COPD and ILD. Alongside this, she is highly skilled in specialist wound care, child and adult vaccinations, and the management of long-term conditions including hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Outside of work, Natalie is a busy mum to two children and enjoys dance classes and socialising with friends and family 💃💬
