Go with the flow and you may get swept away!
Medical interventions are anything we do to intervene with the natural process of birth… think a sweep, induction, forceps, caesarean… and sometimes those interventions are necessary and life saving! However, lots of interventions have risks, and sometimes use of these interventions can lead to further interventions. This is called the cascade of intervention. This cascade is common in hospital settings. It’s just one reason why you are much more likely to result in medical interventions such as episiotomy or use of artificial oxytocin in a hospital birth.

Take a look at this example of how this happens and how you can minimise the chances of it occurring.

Just to be clear… I am NOT anti medical intervention. I AM anti unnecessary intervention, and this happens all too often when induction is offered because of non-medical circumstances such as inducing for due dates.

Think carefully about interventions, and learn about how to facilitate birth if you do need them.

I felt this was important because I hear a lot of “but the doctor legally HAS to discuss stillbirth with you or they’ll get sued” and “but stillbirth IS a risk and they have to tell you about it” comments on my recent reel… no one is saying those conversations shouldn’t happen. HOWEVER, repeatedly bringing it up over and over when you’ve decided to go against their advice, or misrepresenting the size of the risk when you say no to something, is NOT OK. Leaving out quantifying how big or small a risk is, and just stating “you don’t want to go home without your baby do you?” is a purely coercive fear-mongering tactic designed to force you to submit and comply. Of course tragic outcomes happen, but we need honest and balanced conversations around why this is, and then healthcare providers to respect a person’s decision once it’s been made.

The onslaught of fear inducing comments shouldn’t be reinforced by healthcare professionals.

Not all midwives? Yes we know it’s not all midwives. But how can we expect a person using maternity care to know until the trust is earnt? This isnt about creating them and us. It’s about education and highlighting the need to ask questions, do your own prep and information gathering, and trust when it’s earnt.

If you’re offered an induction for being overdue you may get told about the ARRIVE trial if you ask for the evidence backing early induction. The ARRIVE Trial aimed to find out whether inducing labor at 39 weeks in healthy, first-time pregnant people could reduce the risk of serious complications for the baby compared to waiting for labour to start naturally. Researchers wanted to see if planned induction could lower rates of C-sections and improve outcomes. It is frequently cited as justification for induction, however, several critiques highlight methodological and ethical concerns that question its broad application. Swipe to read why this study is flawed!

Ok this is tongue in cheek… but also, if you’re pregnant and in the uk you need to WAKE UP and not wing your birth! The reality of the uk maternity system is that they are failing so many families, and YOU have a responsibility to your unborn child to make sure you are giving them the best start to life. That starts NOW. I offer classes to help educate on options, empower families through self advocacy, and give you all the best chance of a positive birth. If that’s something you think you want, check out my website and classes, link is in my bio!

A 2025 study showed that the benefits of upright positions during labour are:

✅ Reduced Labour Duration
✅ Lower Risk of Caesarean Birth
✅ Less Epidural Use
✅ No Increased Risk for Mother or Baby
✅ Greater Satisfaction & Pain Relief
✅ Improved Labour Progress

Advantages:
Stronger, more efficient contractions
Better baby positioning
Improved blood flow to baby
Less need for interventions such as episiotomy, and assisted vaginal birth)

However... many people are confined to beds, limiting mobility. Particularly when induced and being monitored... Birthrooms prioritize beds, reinforcing expectations.

Yup you read that right… an obstetrician told a client baby would run out of room if she stayed pregnant.

I wonder if people carrying twins or triplets just genetically have more roomy uteruses to be able to grow multiple babies to term then…?

The “reasons” for induction are numerous and dubious often! Check out my induction quick guide for the facts and evidence. Available via the link in my bio or go to https://betterbirthuk.etsy.com/listing/1380755659!
