The hearse is often the moment a funeral truly begins.
Before the service, before the words, the quiet journey through the town sets the tone for the day. It’s a simple act, but one that carries deep meaning for families and the wider community.
In this short video, Simon Welham explains the role of hearses and funeral vehicles, and why that final journey is so important.
At Welham Jones Funerals and Memorials, every detail is handled with care, helping families feel supported at a difficult time.

Heavenly Mother’s Day can be a tender day for many.
Today, we remember the mums, grandmothers, and mother figures who are deeply loved and never forgotten. Though they may no longer be by our side, their kindness, guidance, and love continue to live on in the stories we share and the memories we hold close.
As a family-run business, we understand how important these memories are, and today we hold in our thoughts all those who are missing someone special. If you are remembering your mum today, may you find comfort in the love she gave and the moments you shared.
From our family to yours, we’re thinking of you this Mother’s Day. 💙

What happens when someone is embalmed?
But what exactly is embalming? What does it involve? And is it always necessary?
One of the options you will be asked to consider when planning a funeral is whether you would like your loved one to be embalmed. If you’re planning your own funeral, you will be asked to consider whether you would like your body to be embalmed when the time comes. But what exactly is embalming?.....

Funeral Flowers: How to Choose a Meaningful Tribute
Funeral flowers should feel personal, not just traditional.
It’s easy to focus on what looks impressive. But what truly matters is meaning. A favourite colour. A well-worn flat cap. Service medals. Even a bicycle on the hearse. These small touches often say more than any grand display.
And it doesn’t have to cost more to mean more.
In this short video, we gently explain how to choose funeral flowers and personal tributes that reflect the person you love, without going over the top.
At Welham Jones, we help families across West Kent and South East London find that balance. Heartfelt. Personal. Appropriate.

My family lives far away – how can I involve them in my loved one’s funeral?
When family lives far apart it is often difficult to feel a part of the funeral process. Read our latest blog post about hot to involve family members who live far away.
In 2025, we are – arguably – the most fluid we have ever been as a society; with hybrid working, self-employment, and digital nomads all seemingly inescapable buzzwords, it feels as though no-one is stuck to any single place. The world really is our oyster, but it is one that…

Welham Jones is an independent, family run and own company which was established in 1992. Our first branch to open was in Sevenoaks in the iconic “French’s Dairy” building on the corner of London Road and St Botolph’s Road. The Welham Jones family have lived and grown up in Sevenoaks since the 1960’s and the remaining family members still live here today.
We expanded the business in 1998 with the opening of our Chislehurst branch, followed closely with our Swanley office in 2000.
In 2003 Simon Welham retired from the city and became a full time member of the Welham Jones team, taking on the management and day to day running of the business, allowing his then father in law Mac Jones to step back from the day to day running giving him more time to arrange and conduct personal and close friends funeral.
In 2004 we opened our central office/private mortuary in Dunton Green, which meant we could look after families needs and requirements and allowed us the space to continue to expand.
In 2006 we moved more into the West Kent area and opened our 4th branch in Western Road in Borough Green.
After a time in the design industry, in late 2010 Rebecca Welham joined the family business and is now the 3rd generation of the Welham Jones family to be working in the industry.
In late 2011/early 2012 we opened our 5th branch in the Orpington area, and we are situated on Windsor Drive in Chelsfield.
Welham Jones continued to expand and in 2013 we opened in Tunbridge Wells and then a few years later in Tonbridge taking our branches to 7 in total.
As a business we aim to deliver a professional, respectful, dignified and personal service to the communities in which we cover. All our staff live in the areas we cover meaning we have a good knowledge base of all local customs and traditions.
