Waterbirth. The gentle transistion from womb to world. When the water is kept at a steady 37(ish) Degrees Celsius, your baby is brought earthside with a slower exposure to our cold UK climate. With plenty of oxygen being delivered to the baby via the umbilical cord, a gentle movement through the water up into the air is perfectly safe. Sometimes yours and your baby's first gaze can happen when they are still in the water.

For a high chance of having a waterbirth opt for a standalone birth center or a home birth. MLU and CLU in hospitals have much lower water birth rates.

Our stand alone birth centers here in Sussex and Kent have around an 85% waterbirth rate compared to just 5% within our hospital setting.

(water in your bath/birth pool should be kept between 36.5 and 37.5 degrees celsius. The same as your body temperature.)

Stillbirth is still birth.

Miscarriage is a hope or dream that has been shattered.

Not talking is so much harder than talking.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE MIDWIFE.
Here is my amazing midwife, Kay Hardie, who supported my husband and I from 35 weeks of pregnancy through to the birth of our baby and for one month postnatally as well.
We hired her so we could have a very 'hands off' approach to our labour and birth. I ultimately wanted to experience a free birth but with a midwife on hand to check all was well with the baby after he had been born.
Our experience was incredible. I still remember my husband and Kay eating a Thai takeaway, watching strictly come dancing whilst I laboured in my warm birth pool. It was honestly bliss. She gave us complete privacy. She trusted me in knowing that all was well, which made me trust her back. I will forever be grateful for our unrushed, slow, calm and gentle birth of our second baby, born on our bed in exactly the same place that our daughter was born too.
What do you remember about your midwife?

The neocortex is the ’thinking’ part of our brain. It is responsible for our sensation perception, conscious thought and our language.

How useful is this part of our brain though, our conscious part, during labour and birth? Does it help or hinder the process? (You find this out during class one and two.)

How do we quieten this part of our brain during labour to allow us to connect with our parasympathetic nervous system (calm and connected) rather than our fight, flight or freeze response?

The neocortex plays a vital role in decision making, which definitely comes in handy if your labour is met with surprises. However, learning how to then quieten this part of your brain is essential for you to relax as much as possible, keeping panic at bay and keeping your experience positive.

For so many people who are expecting a baby, they have no idea that they are actually in the driving seat of what happens, regardless of surprises or not. Natalie and Mark gave birth to their Son during lockdown #1 when nothing made sense, NHS guidelines were changing by the hour (not just daily!) and when there was a real sense of panic in the air.
Hypnobirthing allowed them "to remain calm. Tick!" (Natalie's first video on the insta grid) and here she talks about having a sense of armoury and control.
That is how powerful hypnobirthing is. 💪
