When I was pregnant with my first baby I honestly believes that was the case. When I discovered hypnobirthing with my third baby I realised this was absolutely not true! For sure, birth is work but a positive birth is absolutely possible. Well informed pregnant person led birth where your choices are respected are the ingredients of a positive birth.

🙋‍♀️ I'll fess up here and say that the is EXACTLY the birth prep I did for my first birth.
Based on this I can confirm that this is a REALLY bad idea.
Why? Surely it's a good idea to watch birth in action in order to prepare?
Well, yes it is.
⭐️But⭐️
The problem with birth documentaries on TV is that they are created to get viewing figures through the roof. They tend to broadcast the screamy, scary births with birth partners fainting and emergency buttons being pressed and all sorts of other terrifying things.
This creates a horrible expectation in the he'd of the viewer that birth will be awful. I actually get quite cross about this. Of course difficult births happen, of course emergencies happen but the amount shown on such documentaries are ENTIRELY DISPROPORTIONATE to real life.
I guess someone swishing about in a birth pool for hours and hours in low lighting, not doing an awful lot and then a baby making their way out at the end doesn't make good telly right?
My advice would be to avoid these sensationalised programmes and instead seek out a variety of positive birth videos instead. Positive birth comes in so many different forms and I love watching them all!

... is something that never crossed my mind when I had my first baby!

That is 'what birth locations are available to me?'

I assumed (and nobody corrected me) that babies are born in a hospital on a bed right?

Wrong - it turns out. Hospital birth on a bed is one of many birthing options available to you.

Had I been presented with all the available options where I was living at the time (2002) I'd have probably opted for a water birth in the birth centre. Unfortunately, I'd never heard of water birth and nor did I know that there was a birthing pool in the very hospital I had my baby in!

Thankfully there is now so much information available at our fingertips that half an hour with a cuppa and a phone/laptop and you can easily discover what is available to you locally.

Have a look, think about what you'd like to do and let your midwife know.

Most people know it isn't acceptable to pass negative comments on what others are wearing, where they have chosen to go on holiday, or peoples home decor. Let's keep it the same with birth choices!

🏡Want a home birth? Fine!
💉Want en epidural asap? Also fine!
💧A water birth? Fine!
🤷‍♀️Anything else - also fine.

There isn't one perfect way of giving birth. You do you. THAT is the right thing to do.

There can be so many appointments when you're pregnant it can be hard to get your head around who does what!
One thing which is important to remember though is who is in charge...

Your caregivers are full of knowledge and experience and can provide a wealth of information and support but the final say on absolutely EVERYTHING rests with you!
