Day 2 of our winter solstice countdown: Pratyahara (turning inwards).

As the world grows quieter, we draw the senses inward. In Adho Mukha Virasana, let the skin of the face soften, the eyes rest, and the breath settle.

Pratyahara - the art of retreat, is not withdrawal from life, but a return to its essence.

Happy 1st December ✨

We’re moving closer to the shortest day of the year, where we can celebrate the return of the light and the promise of longer days ahead.

With this in mind we will be practicing yoga every day in the run up to the winter solstice.

Each day will offer something new to reflect upon; a moment of presence, balance and light.

Day 1: Sankalpa - intention

As the light fades, we turn inward. Set your sankalpa, a quiet resolve for steadiness and awareness this solstice season.

Begin in stillness, sitting in Virasana or Swastikasana, the spine tall and breath even.

Edgar Stringer is teaching a very special online workshop with us this December to help us reset in the between-time we call “Twixtmas”.

This is a fantastic opportunity to practice with one of the UK’s most respected senior teachers, in the comfort of your own home.

Edgar has been teaching since 1997 and runs the ‘Yoga Tree’ with his wife Lydia.

He stayed in India for 18 months as a student and has since visited frequently to the Iyengar Institute in Pune.

“Since I was a student in Manchester yoga has become as important to me as good or sleep. Yoga practice keeps me healthy in body and mind, I can’t imagine life without it.”

Join Edgar for one or two days this December:
🗓️ Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th
🕤 9:30am - 11:30am
✨ £20 per session

Legs up the wall (viparita karani) is a brilliant restorative pose that gives you the benefits of an inversion without having to do a head or shoulder stand.

It can help you de-stress, improve your circulation and ease back and hip tension (amongst other benefits).

Try this pose towards the end of your practice*, or come along to one of our restorative classes and workshops to learn more about gentle and accessible forms of yoga.

Winter Restorative workshop: Sunday 7th December, 2pm - 4pm, £15 🌲

*Practice under guidance if you have high blood pressure.

25/11/2025

We kicked off this week with a restorative class on Monday morning. Just what was needed after the busy weekend!

Mornings are a great time to practice, but if evenings work best for you we have plenty of classes to choose from on our weekly timetable.

Check out our full schedule online and book via our website today ✨

We learn best in community, which is why we hold monthly sessions for teachers, trainees and mentees to practice, grow and support each other in developing their skills.

Each month our most senior teacher, Frances Homewood, leads a 4-hour workshop here at Sheffield Yoga Centre.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore asanas, pranayama and teaching skills in a friendly and supportive space.

If you’re an Iyengar Yoga teacher or trainee, we’d love for you to join us each month. The next one being:

🗓️ Saturday 6th December, 1:30 - 5:30 pm
✨ £40 for a 4-hour workshop
💜 Book via our website

See you there!
