Men’s health month is being observed this month, specially around this week which includes Fsther’s day on the 15th June.
This month is dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health issues and encouraging men to take proactive steps towards a healthier lifestyle. It serves as a reminder for men and boys to prioritise their health by making a doctor’s appointment when needed and adopting healthier habits.
Several diseases and health conditions tend to affect men more commonly or severely than women, due to a combination of biological, behavioural and social factors. Here are the main ones:-
Heart disease:-
- leading cause of death for men globally.
- risk factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise.
Depression and anxiety
- often under diagnosed in men due to stigma and less likely to seek help.
-men are more likely to show irritability or anger instead of sadness.
Su***de
- men die by su***de at a significantly higher rates than women especially in middle and older age
Common cancers
- prostate cancer, one of the most common and risk increases with age and is often slow growing.
- Lung cancer, strongly associated with smoking and there is a high mortality rate.
- Colorectal cancer affects both genders, but risk is slightly higher in men.
- Testicular cancer is most common in younger men, however, there is a high survival rate with early detection.
Alcohol and drugs: men are more likely to use and misuse drugs and alcohol leading to liver disease, cancer and mental health issues.
“ Your strength isn’t just in what you can endure - it’s in knowing when to take care of yourself. Your health fuels everything: your work, your family, your freedom. Don’t wait for a wake up call. Be the man who checks in, speaks up and stays strong- for yourself and for the ones who count on you”
