As audiologists, we’re seeing first-hand just how much demand for hearing services has grown.

A recent UK Parliament debate highlighted increasing pressure on hospital-based audiology and the important role community services can play in supporting patients closer to home. When care is delivered locally, it can help improve access, support continuity, and ease pressure on wider NHS services.

For us at Byrom Audiology, community care means being accessible, building long-term relationships with our patients, and providing consistent support as hearing needs change over time.

If hearing concerns are affecting your day-to-day life, local support can make a real difference. We’re always happy to talk things through.

If your hearing aids don’t seem as clear as they usually do, it might simply be time to change your wax guards.

If you use CeruStop sticks, change them once a month. If you use HF3 filters, these usually need changing every three months.

A blocked wax guard can reduce sound quality - and often, a quick change makes all the difference.

Not sure which type you have? Or do you need a hand changing them?

Just give us a call - we’re always happy to help!

Today is Emotional Health Day 💛

Hearing loss can have a profound impact on daily life and overall quality of life. It affects communication, confidence, work, social interaction and, often, family relationships.

Over time, communication difficulties can lead to isolation and loneliness. Research shows that untreated hearing loss doubles the risk of developing depression and increases the likelihood of anxiety and other mental health challenges. Yet many people remain undiagnosed or without support.

Encouragingly, studies suggest that the use of hearing aids can reduce these risks and are a cost-effective intervention - not only improving hearing, but supporting emotional wellbeing too.

The impact extends into the workplace. Research exploring employment experiences found that:

• 68% of people with hearing loss felt isolated at work because of their hearing.

• 41% had retired early due to the impact of hearing loss and communication struggles.

These figures highlight why hearing health should be considered part of overall health. Screening for emotional wellbeing in patients with hearing loss - and ensuring access to appropriate hearing support - can make a meaningful difference.

"Tinnitus UK was an invaluable source of help. I scoured their website for hours and rang their helpline a few times for a friendly person to talk to who understood me."

Your donations to the 2026 appeal is important so we can ensure that we can continue providing the community with support so they can continue living well with tinnitus.

Unsure what the difference is between NHS and private audiology?

Both services aim to support your hearing health, but they can differ in areas such as appointment availability, how personalised your care feels, access to hearing technology, and the level of ongoing aftercare. NHS audiology services support a very large number of patients, while private care often offers more flexibility, more time per appointment, and a wider choice of options.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer - the right choice depends on your needs and what feels right for you.

If you’d like to talk through your options or ask any questions, our team is always happy to help.

During Tinnitus Week 2026, Peter visited the House of Lords for the launch of Amplifying Awareness - this year’s national report from focusing on live music and hearing health.

The report brings together extensive research from across the music industry - from artists and venue professionals to festival-goers and fans - with one clear message: hearing damage linked to live music is largely preventable, yet it is becoming increasingly common.

Reading this year’s Tinnitus Week 2026 report just goes to show how urgent the conversation around safe listening has become.

Working in audiology, we regularly meet people whose love of live music has been lifelong - but so too has the tinnitus or hearing loss that followed. What stands out in this report is that awareness of risk is high, yet consistent protection still isn’t.

Some of the report findings are staggering:
• 92% of fans report experiencing tinnitus after live music events.
• 81% of live music workers receive no training on hearing safety.
• Nearly 1 in 5 people now live with permanent hearing loss linked to exposure.

The next step is the launch of the Live Music Hearing Health Pledge, designed to move the sector forward collaboratively.

If you work in live music, events, public health or policy, the latest report is worth taking the time to read.

Curious about how your hearing is doing?

Our free online hearing test, available on our website, is an easy way to get a clearer picture. It takes around 10 minutes and can be completed at home, using a pair of headphones and a quiet space.

It’s not a diagnosis, but it’s a helpful first step in understanding whether your hearing might benefit from a closer look, or simply to offer reassurance if everything feels fine.

If anything comes up or you’re unsure what the results mean, our team is always happy to talk things through and help you decide what feels right for you.

You can try the free hearing test at byromaudiology.com

During the winter months, it’s not uncommon for mental wellbeing to feel more fragile.

Hearing difficulties can add to that - making conversations more tiring, increasing mental fatigue, and sometimes leading people to withdraw or lose confidence in social situations.

A hearing test isn’t just about what you can hear. It’s about understanding how your hearing may be affecting your energy, focus, communication, and overall wellbeing.

Taking a proactive approach to hearing care can help reduce strain and support confidence in everyday life.

If you’ve been feeling more tired, disconnected, or frustrated by communication, it may be worth having your hearing checked.

Living with tinnitus can impact much more than hearing, shaping how people sleep, focus, communicate and feel day to day.

In a study of 478 people with tinnitus, Tinnitus UK found that more than 8 in 10 had experienced low mood or anxiety, with around 7 in 10 reporting feelings of hopelessness or helplessness.

If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone - and it’s okay to acknowledge the emotional impact tinnitus can have.

Support and understanding can make a real difference. Organisations like offer trusted information and a sense of community for people navigating tinnitus.

Taking even one small step towards support can help.
