Engineers Call to Fix Our Public Transport

Shockingly over 90% of disabled people face barriers on at least one mode of transport. This restricts access to education, employment, volunteering, health, and leisure opportunities and does not help the economy.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers in their new report, En route to inclusive public transport, calls on the Government to redirect funding towards fixing stations, vehicles and interchanges that block travel, rather than announcing new schemes that leave old ones untouched.

It adds that ‘shiny new trains’ alone won’t fix the broken transport system, as millions are still locked out by outdated stations and networks. What is needed is to “make sure that the retrofitting of stations and disabled access points are linked directly into the procurement process.” That sounds like common sense to us!
