November is COPD Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness of this chronic respiratory condition.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the collective name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties.

COPD is a common condition that mainly affects middle-aged or older adults who smoke. Many people do not realise they have it.

The breathing problems tend to get gradually worse over time and can limit your normal activities, although treatment can help keep the condition under control.

The main symptoms of COPD are:
• shortness of breath, particularly when you're active
• a persistent chesty cough with phlegm – some people may dismiss this as just a "smoker's cough"
• frequent chest infections
• persistent wheezing

Without treatment, the symptoms usually get progressively worse. There may also be periods when they get suddenly worse, known as a flare-up or exacerbation.

Patients with COPD are encouraged to attend an annual review to keep a check on their condition. We have excellent respiratory nurses here at the surgery, on hand to support patients throughout the year.

⭐⭐ National Self-Care Week ⭐⭐

As we approach the end of Self-Care week, take a moment this weekend to consider how much self care you've given yourself so far this week.

❤ What is National Self-Care Week? ❤

Temperatures have dropped across the country this week.

Cold weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly in older people and those with pre-existing health conditions.

📢It's Carers Rights Day today, bringing people and organisations together across the UK to make sure carers know about the help and support available.

A carer can be someone of any age, who may be in paid work or not and who supports a friend or family member due to their illness, disability, frailty, mental health or substance misuse.

This year’s theme is Know your rights, use your rights. The campaign shines a light on key rights, including:

📌Unpaid carer’s leave
📌Flexible working
📌Asking your GP to identify you as a carer
📌Protection from discrimination
📌Free flu jabs
📌Requesting a carer’s assessment
📌Being involved in hospital discharge planning

Many people provide care without ever using the word “carer” to describe themselves. Recognising the role is the first step to getting the support and information needed to support unpaid carers.

For more information you can contact our Carer Lead, Claire, here at the surgery or visit: https://ourdorset.org.uk/carers/

❄️ This winter, stay safe — skip steam inhalation.

Steam inhalation can cause serious burns, especially in children. And there’s no good evidence it helps colds or coughs.

✅ Safer ways to feel better:
• Drink plenty of fluids
• Try decongestant sprays or vapour rubs
• Rest and let your body recover

Every winter, NHS hospitals treat children with painful burns from hot water spills. Don’t take the risk — steam inhalation does more harm than good.

This is run through British Cycling, and is open to age 16 and over men and women. All you need is a bike, helmet and the desire to feel like a kid again, out on the lanes with mates on your bike.

It's very social, no one gets left behind and we finish with coffee/tea and cake at the cafe. Please look at the link for more details and to sign up to ride.
