CHMAS Training Welcome to CHMAS Training, we provide engaging and informative outdoor activities and first aid training.

Chris Hughes Multi Activity Services (CHMAS) specialise in providing high quality bespoke training in first aid and outdoor activities. We are Based in Shrewsbury, which is centrally located in the glorious Shropshire Countryside but CHMAS can run adventure courses anywhere in Shropshire and North Wales. Our mission is quite simple and that is to give our clients the confidence to go off and have

their own adventures. Indeed, some of our past clients have become good friends and we have shared quite a few adventures together.

For day 2 of the Lowland Assessment for Standon Bowers Outdoor Education Centre we were on Cannock Chase. As we explored new areas of the Chase for me, I was told about trees, plants, myths, the geology of the area and the restorative power of nature.

I am super pleased to welcome these three new Lowland Leaders who put in an extremely strong performance.

It's always a privilege to Course Direct for other organisations and over the weekend, I will be Directing a Lowland Leader Assessment for Standon Bowers Outdoor Education Centre.

A very strong performance from today's Lowland Leader Assessment candidates. They navigated the route with ease and dealt with all the incidents that happened to 'Clumsy Chris'.

The group will be walking on Cannock Chase tomorrow and have been tasked to research points of interest and teach a navigation topic.

Let the fun commence.

Another super day on the second day of a Lowland Leader training course for Standon Bowers. We navigated, talked and dealt with scenarios which the candidates took in their stride.

There were one or two navigationally challenged moments but it was lovely to see the candidates come up with a plan to get back on track using the skills they had learnt from the day before.

The T50 is now on OS online mapping , with green diamonds and the occasional words . See the example below. It wouldn't be enough to follow the route, but it is probably helpful. At present this is just on the online mapping tool. It is not yet on the app, apparently the app is third party software that is just refreshed occasionally, so it will appear in time. I'm not sure if it is on the paper maps yet. If someone orders a custom map it will be there. Fame at last .

Well then that's my second ML Expedition completed for this year in the form of an assessment for Paul Poole Mountaineering.

It could be best described as a Vivaldi Expedition (we had all four seasons over the course of the expedition). Pleased to say that all four candidates passed and it was an absolute pleasure to be part of their ML journey.

It's Easter weekend. The clocks have changed. The days are longer.
More light. More time. More opportunity.

For many, this is the season they head back into the mountains.
But for others, this could be the season they take their very first step.

Not everyone has the same access to the outdoors — whether it’s cost, confidence, or knowing where to start. That’s where we come in. We exist to help people take that step. To open the door to training, experience, and a future in the mountains that might not have felt possible before.

This spring could be the start of something.

Our Story

Chris Hughes Multi Activity Services (CHMAS) is run by Chris & Janet Hughes both of whom are passionate about being outdoors and having an adventure. We are based in Shrewsbury, which means we have access to the glorious South Shropshire Hills and easy access to the River Severn for those who prefer a nautical theme for their adventures. We provide bespoke activities and courses in Bushcraft & Survival, Canoeing, DofE Expeditions, Hill Walking, First Aid and Group Activity programmes. Whether you are novice or old hand their passion and experience will take you to the next level. Our mission is quite simple and that is to give our clients the confidence to go off and have their own adventures. Indeed, some of our past clients have become good friends and we have shared quite a few adventures together.
