Pregnancy advice is often well-meaning… but very general 🤍

“Strengthen your pelvic floor.”
“Open your hips.”
“Do your kegels.”
“Squats are great for birth.”

And sometimes they are.
But sometimes they’re not.

Generic advice assumes every pregnant body starts in the same place, moves the same way, and needs the same preparation. That’s rarely true.

Some bodies need more strength. Some need more softness. Some need stability, coordination, or better awareness rather than more stretching or squeezing.

Birth isn’t about ticking exercises off a list. It’s about how your body adapts, responds, and works under load.

Personalised birth prep asks a different question
Not “What’s meant to help?”
But “What does this body actually need?”

If you’ve been doing all the “right” things and something still doesn’t feel quite right, it might not be you. It might just be that your body needs a different approach.

As a hypnotherapist I’m fully aware of the power of visualisation. But imagine training for a marathon by only visualising yourself crossing the finish line.

No running training.
No strength work.
No mobility.

You’d question that approach straight away!

Birth is no different.

Your body deserves preparation that matches the task it’s about to do.

Mindset absolutely helps you cope, and transforms your confidence.
Physical prep helps your body perform.

Both matter 💗

The biggest misconception I see around the pelvic floor?

That it’s all about squeezing harder. Lifting higher. Holding for longer.

In birth, your pelvic floor needs to be responsive. It needs enough tone to guide your baby’s descent, and enough ability to relax in order to allow them to pass through. It needs to be able to coordinate with your breath and movement.

Strength without awareness can actually get in the way.

Birth preparation isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing what your body actually needs.

Sometimes, a birth story doesn’t end when the baby arrives.

For many women, parts of their experience stay vivid. Moments that still feel confusing, overwhelming or unfinished. You might find yourself replaying certain details, or feeling a rush of emotion when someone asks about your birth.

That’s why I’ve created my Birth Debrief Sessions - a safe, gentle space to explore your birth story with compassion and understanding.

Together, we talk through what happened, help you make sense of it, and find the peace or closure you might not have had at the time. You don’t have to minimise what you went through. And you don’t have to carry it alone.

Sessions are available online, in my Claughton-based therapy room or I can even come out to you at home, as long as you live on the Wirral. You can book or find out more at https://www.therelaxedmamaclub.com/birth-debrief

🌿 Let’s bring softness and understanding to your story, so you can move forward feeling lighter, calmer, and more you again.

I couldn’t not… 😂 I’d say this is pretty spot on 💕

Most birth preparation focuses on the mind.

And mindset absolutely matters (qualified hypnotherapist here 🙋‍♀️)

But birth is also a physical event - whatever type of birth you’re planning.

It asks your body to move, adapt, open, coordinate and work efficiently under pressure.

Yes, breathing techniques are incredibly effective. Yes, affirmations can create huge mindset shifts. But real preparation looks at the whole picture.

Mind and body together.

Being asked the questions isn’t the same as being supported.

So many women are screened for mental health in pregnancy and postnatally, but the conversation stops the moment they appear to be coping. If you look like a “well woman”, it can feel as though there’s no space to say actually, I’m not okay.

In this clip, OT Helen Buteux shares her own experience of this, and how it left her feeling like asking for help wasn’t really an option.

If you’ve ever answered those questions honestly but felt brushed over, this conversation matters.

You’re allowed to need support even when things look fine on the surface.

Becoming a mother doesn’t erase who you were.
But it does change the shape of your life.

In this clip, OT Helen Buteux talks about matrescence and identity. How the stories we tell about who we are are often built on our pre-baby life, and how jarring it can feel when those stories no longer fit the reality of motherhood.

Rather than trying to go back, she invites us to gently look at the things that made us feel like ourselves before baby, and consider how small, realistic elements of those can return over time.

Not all at once. Not immediately. Just when and where it’s possible.
