I’m calm.

What about you?

My secret?

Despite my busy life, I prioritise relaxation, as I understand how it works.

Relaxing every day and sometimes three times a day melts away the strains and stresses. It affords you the balance you need to stable your mood, take life in your stride, and experience joyful moments.

Building time for your relaxation is as important as food! I’m sure you wouldn’t go a day without a meal?

But what about down time?

What do you actually know about relaxation methods?

Studies show that relaxation approaches like guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, and biofeedback are proven to reduce stress. Meditation, including those that involve movement, like yoga and tai chi also promote relaxation.

Relaxation strategies help numerous health conditions, including anxiety relating to illnesses and medical procedures, and insomnia. They are also effective in treating chronic headaches.
When utilising relaxation as a therapeutic tool, the goal is common among all approaches.

It’s to bring about the body's natural relaxation response. This might be observed through slower breathing, lower blood pressure, and a feeling of improved well-being.

Experts advise that relaxation approaches are generally safe, however, before engaging in them, advice from your medical practitioner should be sought. This is especially valid if you have any underlying health conditions, especially, psychiatric illness, epilepsy, and heart disease.

Helpful or Unhelpful?

Introduction

What if you woke up tomorrow and all your stresses had vanished?

It is possible!

And we’re going to tell you how to do it!

Problem-solving approaches used by experts in the field of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy ask a key question: Is your thought helpful or unhelpful?
If it’s unhelpful, then it’s a possibility that you’re self-sabotaging, holding yourself back by believing something that may not be true.

Using the ABC model you learned about in our last lesson helps you cast light on what you can do or change in order to reduce your stress.

Identifying whether your thought as a result of a stressful situation, is helpful or not, gives you a big clue as to what to do next.

Your stress reduction as a result of problem-solving using this approach will enable you to set your mind to achieving whatever it is you want to achieve.
You’ll no longer be captive by your overactive mind or unhelpful thoughts. Your problems will not play over and over like a broken record.

You’ll feel like the weight has been lifted off your shoulders when you become skilful in this and you’ll regain control. You’ll be physically healthy too, and your relationships and va-va-voom for life will lift off.

I wonder what it would be like to wake up in the morning without feeling stressed?

You’ll probably know all the stress management techniques going under the sun, right? But why then, do you still struggle to manage stress?

You might have tried strategies before, like exercise, deep breathing, or meditation and got close to it. But have these fizzled out?

Taking the pressure off yourself can help reduce stress. Trying to be a Super Marvel character might get you brownie points at work in the short-term but you’ll soon burn out and be less productive.

There are a number of ways you can let go of stress and by the end of the lesson, you’ll have a few things to try, to put you back in the driver’s seat.

You’ll learn how best to build exercise into your routine so you’ll choose to integrate it into your life, long after you’ve completed this course.

Naturally, it’s always a good idea to consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.

Seeing stress as a blocker to your achievements and how it affects your body and mind is the first step.
