As the Chinese are welcoming in the year of the rat (1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020) symbolising optimism and energy, I want to share The Optimist Creed by Christian D. Larson written in 1912 with you all. Larson was considered to be the founder of the ‘New Thought Movement’ and lectured extensively during the 1920s and 1930s. He believed that we all have wonderful latent powers which with the proper attitude can be harnessed for success. Many have found this creed inspiring.

Christian D. Larson–The Optimist Creed

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words but great deeds.
To live in faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you.

This week we will be focusing on the ujjayi breath. It’s an integral part of Vinyasa style yoga linking the breath with your movement. The ujjayi breath has many benefits, a few of which are listed below:

• It influences our parasympathetic nervous system affecting how we feel.
• It slows the heart rate and calms the mind.
• It generates internal body heat which dissipates out allowing for safer stretching
• It improves the uptake of oxygen and helps to clear all the stale air at the bases of the lungs.
• It helps to improve concentration in your physical practice by keeping your awareness on the present moment.
• It allows you to hold poses for longer
• It adds a meditative quality that maintains the rhythm of the class.
• and several more……….

GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED AND HAVE SOME FUN WITH YOUR YOGA OVER CHRISTMAS

Yoga is something that all the family can do and it could be the perfect activity for Christmas Day. Children will love playing with some of the poses especially when you add some imagination and fun. Teenagers will love being challenged to arm or head balances and the elderly can join in while seated or just enjoy watching.

Those who want something less physical might prefer a Yoga quiz! It doesn't matter how you do it, just have fun. Here are a few suggestions:

Poses for children to have fun with

Reindeer–low lunge with Goddess arms
Ice Skater–Dancer
Snowboarding Elf–Warrior 2
Snow Ball–knees into chest rocking and rolling
Husky–DFD on tiptoes
Father Christmas in his sleigh–Bow
Flying snowman–Aeroplane

Family fun

Dressing the Christmas Tree: Tree pose with arms stretched out parallel to the floor, everybody takes it in turns to add Christmas decorations to their head and arms to see how long they can hold their balance: a bit like Jenga in reverse. The one that makes them tumble wins the game. I will definitely be playing this one as there is nothing like some friendly family competition. One word of caution, yoga and alcohol don't go particularly well together so it is best to avoid these games if you have had a boozy lunch.

Yoga charades–guess the pose
Yoga quiz

Teenagers

Challenge them to free-standing head or handstands and see how long they can hold it.

Elderly

Whatever they feel they can do.

'Merry Christmas to you all'🍷🎄🎅

Celebrate World Kindness Day with a simple gesture.

Today is ‘World Kindness Day’. It is celebrated internationally to promote kindness in all its forms. It started in 1998 after the formation of the World Kindness Movement. It was their hope and goal to create a day that would help to raise awareness of the importance of kindness as a unifying power between people everywhere. In previous years it has been celebrated around the world by the following acts:

 Kindness UK handed out 10,000 free chocolate bars at London Train stations
 The Singapore Kindness Movement gave out 30,000 Gerberas (flowers)
 World Kindness Australia conducted an enormous Kindness Hug on Bondi Beach
 Kindness UK encouraged a Text Wave that swept the UK
 A Kindness Awards Ceremony took place in Parma, Italy hosted by The Italian Kindness Movement
 Kindness Scotland put on 'Kind Kid Awards'

“A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions,
and the roots spring up and make new trees.
The greatest work that kindness does to others
is that it makes them kind themselves”–Frederick Williams Faber

A YOGA POSE THAT CAN BENEFIT EVERYONE—WHATEVER YOUR LEVEL

Legs up the Wall: VIPARIA-KARANI

The simplest yoga pose, but one with many more benefits than you might imagine. Lying with your legs up the wall is one of the most accessible yoga poses. It doesn’t require much strength or flexibility and is easy to get into. It is as useful for beginners as for advanced students. Read the latest blog post to find out more.

The first block of classes finish this week in Singleton and East Dean. If you have missed any classes during these blocks, there are still spaces on Thursday 24th October at 9.30 am in Singleton to make up for any you may have missed. https://www.ktmyoga.com/classes.html You are very welcome to come and join us. We now have a week’s break when I hope you can reflect on everything we have covered. Remember consistency with your yoga practice helps—as is the case with all activities if you want to improve. Yoga is something that can be practised at home. You don’t need any expensive equipment. You don't even need a mat if you have a soft non-slip surface to use. Fitting in a few Sun Salutations, some yoga stretches and spending a few minutes focusing on your ujjayi breath will make quite a difference. It will help you feel energised and ready for the day ahead.
The next block begins on the 4th (Singleton Village Hall, 8.30 am), 5th (East Dean Village Hall, 8.30 am) and 7th (Singleton Village Hall, 9.30 am) November for a further six weeks. I hope during the last few weeks you have become aware of some of the many benefits. It doesn’t happen overnight: Yoga is a journey and for many, once started it becomes part of your life. I look forward to seeing you on your mats again in November.
