In the 18 century Swedish Physician Pehr Ling established the first scientific system of massage based on anatomy and physiology. Thus was born the term “Swedish massage”.

Hippocrates states that physicians must be experienced in the art of massage defining the restorative effects of massage as visMedicatrixNaturae — the body's own recurative powers.
