The story of Demelza: A legacy of extraordinary care 💙
🗺️ 1994 – Inspired by their daughter Demelza, who worked at a children’s hospice before passing away from a brain tumour, Derek and Jennifer Phillips founded a charity to bring similar care to families in South East England. 🗺️
🫶 1998 – The first Demelza hospice opened in Sittingbourne, Kent. Designed by Derek himself, it became a safe haven for children with serious or life-limiting conditions. 🫶
📌 2004 – Demelza merged with James House in East Sussex, extending therapies, respite and end-of-life support directly into children’s homes across the area.
📍2009 – Another hospice opened in Eltham, South East London, extending Demelza’s services to even more families in need.
Today, Demelza continues to deliver extraordinary care to extraordinary children across Kent, South East London, and East Sussex - both in the community and out on site. Find out more: https://bit.ly/4avmFO2

Demelza Hospice Care for Children is a charity providing specialist care and emotional support for children with terminal conditions, and their loved ones across Kent, South East London and East Sussex.
Our Mission:
At Demelza, we believe every child and young person who has a terminal condition should receive the care and attention they need to live the most fulfilling life they can. We aim to provide specialist care and support to babies, children, and young people, to give them and their families the opportunity to build memories, for however long they have together. Demelza’s care covers diagnosis, day to day family life, times of crisis, end of life, and through bereavement, providing support for all those affected.
Company Overview:
Demelza provides specialist care and emotional support for children with terminal conditions and their loved ones, so they can enjoy their time together as a family, for as long as they have.
We care for children with a range of different conditions, some of which are very complex and so rare, they have no name.
Our services include:
- Hospice at home care
- Hospice Care

These services are currently provided through Demelza Kent, our hospice in Sittingbourne, Demelza South East London, a six bedded hospice in Eltham, and Demelza Community, our hospice at home service operating in East Sussex.
As a charity, we’re almost entirely dependent on the generosity of our supporters to provide the funds that keep our services going.
Please make sure every family can depend on us when they need us most.
