“I’ve hurt my neck!”

And honestly… it’s awful.

This morning I woke up barely able to move my head, with pain running into my arm and it’s reminded me just how frightening and frustrating sudden pain can feel.

But here’s the thing: necks (and backs) don’t usually “just go”. There’s almost always a build-up - old injuries, altered movement, stress, tension, poor sleep… all quietly stacking up until one small movement tips you over the edge.

So if this has ever happened to you, you’re not weak, broken or doing anything “wrong”.

I’m sharing what I’m doing right now to help myself in an acute flare-up — including a really common mistake people make in the first 24–48 hours, and what actually helps instead.

Save this for later, or send it to someone whose neck has “just gone”.

When you come to see me for osteopathy, the treatment is usually gentle, hands-on, and tailored to you. Most people describe it as a mix of firm but comfortable pressure, and stretching and guided movement, rather than anything aggressive.

You may feel areas being gently worked where your body is tight or restricted, a sense of muscles easing, or joints being moved in a controlled way. Sometimes people notice warmth, light tingling, or a feeling of release as things start to loosen.

Occasionally there may be a click or pop from a joint, similar to cracking your knuckles. This is completely normal and not painful, and I’ll only use techniques you’re comfortable with. Many treatments don’t involve this at all.

My priority is that you feel safe, listened to and at ease. If anything feels uncomfortable or you’re unsure at any point, you can always tell me and I’ll adjust straight away.

After treatment, some people feel lighter or more relaxed immediately, while others may feel a little achy or tired for a day or two, like after gentle exercise. This usually settles quickly.

Overall, osteopathy with me is about working with your body, not forcing it - supporting it to move and feel better in a way that suits you.

If you’ve been unsure what osteopathy feels like, I hope this helps — feel free to ask me any questions.

Even if your posture is 'perfect', sitting for long periods can still cause pain. Muscles become fatigued from holding the same position, joints stay compressed, and circulation is reduced. Over time, tension builds in the back, neck, hips, and shoulders. Weak or tight muscles may struggle to support your spine, making discomfort more likely.

Here are 5 ways to help ease the pain:

1. Take short movement breaks every 30–60 minutes.

2. Stretch tight areas like your hips, chest, and shoulders.

3. Strengthen supporting muscles such as your core, glutes, and upper back.

4. Adjust your desk setup to support your spine and reduce strain.

5. Osteopathy can help release tension, improve mobility, and support your nervous system.

Caring for your body in these ways can help you feel more comfortable and support your overall wellbeing.

I often talk to my patients about how closely the body and mind are connected. Looking after your body isn’t just about easing aches and pains — it plays an important role in supporting your mental wellbeing too.

When the body is under ongoing stress, pain, or tension, the nervous system can stay in a heightened state. Over time, this can affect mood, energy levels, sleep, and how well we cope day to day. By caring for your body, you’re also giving your mind the opportunity to settle and reset.

Ways you can support your body (and your mental health):

• Gentle, regular movement that feels right for you
• Nourishing food and adequate hydration
• Prioritising rest and good sleep habits
• Taking time for simple self-care routines
• Spending time outdoors and getting natural light
• Listening to your body and responding early to signs of tension or fatigue
• Osteopathy, which can help reduce pain, improve mobility, release physical tension, and support regulation of the nervous system — all of which can positively influence mental wellbeing

In practice, I often see that when patients feel more comfortable and at ease in their bodies, they also feel more resilient mentally. Supporting your physical health is an important part of caring for your overall wellbeing.

Stress doesn’t just live in your head. It shows up in your body.

When we’re under stress, our nervous system stays on high alert.

Our muscles subtly brace. Our breathing becomes shallower. Our movement can change.

Over time, that constant tension can contribute to:
• Neck and shoulder pain
• Jaw clenching and headaches
• Low back or hip discomfort
• A feeling of being “tight” or restless even at rest

This is our bodies trying to protect us.

Gentle hands-on treatment, safe movement and reassurance all send signals to the nervous system that it’s okay to soften and let go. When our body feels supported, our mind often follows.

Pain doesn’t always mean damage, sometimes it’s a stressed system asking for care.

You don’t have to push through. If your body feels like it’s holding onto more than it needs to, my support will help. Comment STRESS to arrange an appointment.

Is better sleep one of your New Year goals?

When people come to me in pain they often ask what exercises they should do or what they can do to feel better. Very often my first answer is sleep. Get more, good quality rest.

Deep sleep increases blood flow to muscles and tissues, helping muscle tone calm down. It’s also when growth hormone is released, which is vital for tissue healing.

Poor sleep increases inflammation in the body and keeps the nervous system in a stressed, fight or flight state. Exactly what we don’t want when you’re trying to recover.

Sleep is one of the most powerful tools your body has for healing. In short, poor sleep can make pain feel worse.

💤 If you’re in Kent and pain or poor sleep is affecting you, comment the word SLEEP to find out more or to arrange an appointment.

Part 2 coming later this week - I’ll show you the sleep positions I recommend to best support your spine.

🎄 3 Ways to Release Festive Tension 🎄

The festive season often means more driving, more sitting, more phone use and a bit more stress too. These gentle movements can help reduce muscle tension, improve mobility and give your body a chance to relax before the Christmas Weekend.

⭐ Chest Opener
• Sit or stand tall
• Gently draw your elbows back to open the chest
• Take a slow breath in, then relax
Repeat 5 times to ease upper-back and shoulder tension.

🎁 Side Stretch
• Sit or stand tall
• Reach one arm overhead and gently lean to the opposite side
• Hold for 5–10 seconds
• Swap sides
Helps release tightness through the sides of the body and lower back.

🎄 Gentle Neck Nods
• Slowly nod your head forward and back
• Keep the movement small and controlled
• Breathe normally
Great for easing neck stiffness.

✨ Festive Tips:
• Move slowly and stay pain-free
• Try these once or twice a day
• Perfect for a quick reset between festive tasks

If aches and stiffness don’t take a holiday, please know you’re not on your own. I address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Save this post and if you feel tightness building this week, do these
little and often, your body will thank you.
