Femoral Stress Fractures?
With marathon season in full swing femoral stress fractures are at their most prevalent.
These occur due to overdoing your running prep.
Typically pain in the top half of your thigh on heel strike or landing in that leg should be treated as a potential stress fracture.
If you cannot to a single leg hop test and have pain on running but not walking, go and see a clinician .
An mri will show up or rule out this injury.
Your vitamin d and calcium levels as well as bone health, diet and menstrual history (for ladies) should also be checked.
Risk factors:
Consuming more than 10 alcoholic drinks per week
Excessive physical activity with limited rest periods
Female athlete triad (eating disorders, amenorrhea, osteoporosis)
Female s*x
Low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D
Recreational running (more than 25 miles per week
A stress fracture needs time to heal ... typically 8 to 12 weeks rest followed by
Stage 0: Pain free walking for 30 mins before progressing to stage 1.
Stage 1: 9 mins walk + 1 min jog
Progressively Switch to
1 mins walk + 9 min jog
Stage 2: 9 mins jog+ 1 min running
Progressively Switch to
1 mins jog+ 9 min running
