After the service.

Attend the wake if invited, it’s a chance to share memories and support the family. You don’t need to stay long; your presence is what matters.

Send a thoughtful message if you can’t attend, a handwritten note or message expressing sympathy will likely be appreciated.

Interacting with Others.

Offer condolences gently. A simple “I’m sorry for your loss” goes a long way. Avoid clichés or trying to fix grief—just be present.

Respect personal space. Some mourners may want quiet reflection. Be sensitive to emotional cues and avoid overwhelming anyone.

During a Service.

Keep devices off or on silent. Avoid texting or taking photos. Try to focus on being present and respectful.

Follow the lead of others. Watch for cues from the family or officiant. Stand, sit, or participate when appropriate, even if you're unfamiliar with the customs.

This month we will be exploring the dos and don’ts of attending a funeral.

Before the Funeral.

Dress with respect. Choose modest, dark clothing unless told otherwise. Aim for neat and understated. In the UK it is traditional to wear black but be aware that some religions and cultures favour different colours for mourning.

Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes before the service begins. It shows respect and avoids disrupting the ceremony.
