Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system used in the East for over 2,000 years. Acupuncture adopts an holistic approach to healthcare, considering the mind and body as one, and is based on the idea that a blockage or disturbance in the flow of ‘qi’ (a concept from Chinese philosophy), can cause health issues. Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) theory views pain and illness as an indication that the body is out of balance.

Sometimes, people choose acupuncture even though they have no obvious symptoms. Some choose to have regular treatment because they find it beneficial and relaxing, especially if they lead a very stressful life. Often, people turn to acupuncture to take back control of their health, whilst others want to understand their body in a deeper way, wanting to look after their body, mind and soul.

If you’re considering traditional acupuncture in this new year, be sure to look for a British Acupuncture Council registered practitioner. Being on an accredited register, BAcC Members are able to display the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) quality mark, a sign that they belong to a register which meets the PSA’s robust standards. https://acupuncture.org.uk/find-an-acupuncturist/

BAcC Statement on recent report of Ellen White injury

By BAcC

We were concerned to hear and read today’s story about the England footballer, Ellen White, and her experience following acupuncture treatment, which resulted in a punctured lung. We would like to express our best wishes to Ellen for a total recovery.

Whilst we do not know the full details of the case in question, we would like to emphasise the importance of seeking treatment from a properly qualified acupuncture practitioner.

The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is the largest UK professional body for Traditional Acupuncture, which is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). We set the highest standards of professional practice for the acupuncture profession in the UK.

The British Acupuncture Accreditation Board (BAAB) fosters and monitors high quality educational and professional standards, so that the general public can be assured that graduates from BAAB accredited programmes are knowledgeable, reflective, competent and safe acupuncture practitioners. Our BAAB professionally qualified members are all degree-level trained in acupuncture (a minimum of three years and 3,600 hours of training), or equivalent.

Our members have had full anatomy and physiology training with an extensive focus on risk and safety. Our members have also undergone at least 400 hours of in-person clinical training and, following qualification, are expected to carry out regular risk assessments and yearly continuous professional development (CPD).

Our safety standard is incredibly important to us and protecting the general public is a priority.

We are always keen to raise the profile of traditional acupuncture and, in light of today’s story, would welcome the opportunity to highlight the critical importance of upholding standards of practice for acupuncture.

My dad designed the wind tunnel that tested the engine of concord 💖

April 1985, Concorde flies supersonic. This is the only picture ever taken of Concorde flying at Mach2, 1,350 mph. It was taken from a Royal Air Force Tornado, which rendezvoused with Concorde briefly to the south of Ireland. Although the Tornado could match (and even exceed) Concorde's cruising speed it could only do so for a matter of minutes due to the enormous rate of fuel consumption. After racing to catch Concorde and struggling to keep up, the Tornado broke off the rendezvous after just four minutes, while Concorde cruised serenely on to JFK!
