Spotlight on Rock Climbing Group 🧗‍♀️💙

We love hearing feedback like this! MN shared:

"I honestly love coming to the Rock Climbing group. M has managed to actually attend something and keep coming when everything else in her life is so hard to attend – so I just want to say thank you for the amazing job you do."

Seeing children engage, have fun, and build confidence in a safe and supportive environment is exactly why we do what we do. Rock climbing isn’t just about the physical challenge – it’s about resilience, independence, and celebrating every small victory. ✨

Talking about mental health with your child might feel a little intimidating, but it’s such an important part of helping them understand and manage their emotions.

Here’s how you can approach it:
🔹 Start with open, non-judgmental questions - Ask your child how they’re feeling and let them share at their own pace.
🔹 Listen actively and validate their feelings - Let them know it’s okay to feel whatever they’re feeling!
🔹 Share simple strategies - Teach them basic ways to cope with stress or anxiety, like deep breathing or taking a break when things feel overwhelming.

Talking openly about mental health helps your child feel understood, supported, and more equipped to manage their emotions. 💙

Helping Children Understand Their Emotions 💙

A child was referred to Ordinary Magic’s Connected Care Network for emotional and wellbeing support and joined one of our Nurture Groups in primary school.

Through fun, hands-on activities, the child learned how to:
🔹 Understand and release anger – using creative experiments like our “volcano” activity to see how emotions build and release
🔹 Improve teamwork and communication skills
🔹 Build healthy routines, including better sleep habits to start the day feeling refreshed

They also had time to talk about things that matter, like family trips to the zoo and aquarium, helping to build confidence and connection.

With continued support at home and school, the child now has trusted adults to speak to when feeling overwhelmed, opportunities to release energy during the school day, and strategies to manage emotions effectively.

✨ We’ve seen amazing growth – their Core 10 scores improved by 64%, and as they said: “It helped me understand my emotions better.”

Supporting Young People Through Trauma and Transitions 💙

E is a young person who has faced significant challenges, including trauma from domestic violence, bullying, and difficulties transitioning to secondary school. These experiences affected E’s mental health, confidence, and overall wellbeing.

Through Ordinary Magic’s Connected Care Network, we worked closely with E and his family to provide tailored support:

🔹 Coordinated with schools and services to ensure E would be in a safe, supportive environment
🔹 Built confidence and self-esteem through weekly Flash Climbing sessions and SEMH support
🔹 Supported healthy routines with diet, movement, and activity programmes
🔹 Provided guidance and emotional support to E’s mother through weekly parent groups

As a result, E has experienced significant improvements:
✨ Core 10 wellbeing scores show a notable increase
✨ Confidence has grown – E is proud to wear his new school uniform
✨ Enuresis is no longer occurring
✨ E feels safe, listened to, and supported as he prepares for his new secondary school

E’s mother also reports feeling supported, connected, and reassured through our parent support and signposting services.

At Ordinary Magic, we work to ensure young people like E can transition safely, build resilience, and feel confident in their futures – with the whole family supported along the way.

Supporting Children Through Trauma and Mental Health Challenges 💙

We received a referral to Ordinary Magic for a child who was struggling with their mental health and self-harm, compounded by experiences of domestic violence and trauma.

Through our Connected Care Network, we worked closely with the family, school, and other support services to create a tailored plan to keep the child safe, supported, and connected:
🔹 1:1 support from trained IDVA and Mental Health professionals
🔹 Community groups to build positive connections
🔹 Online safety and healthy relationship education
🔹 Family support visits and safety planning

Today, the child is receiving the support they need in school and at home. Our team continues to work with the family, and the child will soon join our October theatre trip, helping them connect with peers and experience new opportunities in a safe environment.

At Ordinary Magic, we believe every child deserves understanding, safety, and the chance to thrive – and we’re here to make that happen.

Mindfulness isn’t just a moment of calm, it’s a powerful tool to support emotional well-being for both children and adults. Practising mindfulness as a family can reduce stress, improve focus, and help everyone feel more grounded and connected.

Here’s a simple way to start:
🌸 Take a 5-minute quiet moment together
🌸 Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and focus on your breath
🌸 Encourage each family member to notice how they feel, without judgment

✨ Over time, these small mindful moments can help children manage anxiety, improve concentration, and develop resilience – skills that last a lifetime.

Have a go and share your experience with us in the comments!

Reflecting on World Mental Health Day – 10th October 💚

On World Mental Health Day, we’re reflecting on the amazing work our Ordinary Magic Wellbeing Team has been doing. Over the past few weeks, we delivered our Healthy Mind, Happy Mind workshops to 6 primary schools, 21 classes, and 631 children! 🌟

It’s been inspiring to see children engaging with activities that help them understand their emotions, build resilience, and develop positive coping strategies. A huge thank you to our dedicated wellbeing team and to all the schools for welcoming us – your support makes this work possible.

If your school would like to bring our workshops to your children, please get in touch: Michelle@ordinarymagic.co.uk

Supporting Children’s Emotional Wellbeing 💙

We had a child referred to Ordinary Magic’s Connected Care Network for emotional and wellbeing support. Working 1:1 with a Senior Emotional Wellbeing Practitioner in school, the child engaged confidently, exploring their feelings, identifying triggers, and developing strategies to manage emotions.

Through weekly sessions, we:
🔹 Explored emotions and behaviours, helping the child understand anger and its effects
🔹 Built strategies for better decision-making and regulating responses
🔹 Supported friendships and navigating conflicts at school
🔹 Provided a safe space to share worries about family and life

Over time, the child developed greater confidence in managing emotions, forming positive friendships, and expressing themselves safely. With continued support from school, family, and our team, they now have practical tools and trusted adults to turn to when needed.

✨ We’ve observed remarkable growth – their Core 10 scores show a 70% improvement, and their kind, thoughtful nature is shining through.

Expanding Our Reach - Wellbeing Workshops Across 2 Schools! 💙

Our Wellbeing Team had an incredible day delivering workshops at Cheswick Green Primary and Tidbury Green Primary School, reaching 210 children in total! 🌟

The feedback from Cheswick Green Primary was heartwarming:
"I wanted to say a huge thank you to you and your team at Ordinary Magic for coming into school today. Y3, 4, and 5 all loved the workshop, and creating their toolboxes was a great activity for them to support their mental health. Thank you again!"

A massive thank you to the amazing staff and students for welcoming us! We’re so proud to be part of these children’s journey in building resilience and emotional wellbeing. 💛
