What this guy said 👇👇👇👇

Posted • These bags take my total collected in 2022 so far to 312. That’s not including bags collected during our public group events. SCARY STUFF!

After all our efforts I’d love to be able to say we are winning the battle against litter but, if I’m being honest, I can’t because we’re not.

Do some areas look tidier? Sure… for a while but the litter louts return. Retailers keep churning out the pointless packaging and the cycle repeats.

Our councils do their best but just don’t have the resources to clean it all up themselves. Do we really want more of what we pay our councils diverted to street cleaning? Do we really want to pay even more to add extra resources? Or should we all try to do our bit to help the community?

So why bother if nothing changes? Well, there are several reasons…

✅ It’s great for my mental health. In a world that seems out of control cleaning up an area leaving it better than I found it gives me a little control.
✅ We’re not going to change minds and behaviour overnight. Constant reminders and nudges in the right direction WILL start to make a difference.
✅ Litter picking isn’t the end game. It’s a sticky plaster. A tool to start conversations and build a community. A useful way to start educating.
✅ Litter picking over an extended period enables you to clear historic litter. Trash that’s been blighting your local environment for decades. Continuing the litter picks prevent those grot spots returning in the future.
✅ Every piece of litter picked up could save a life - wildlife and pets.

Sometimes you might feel like giving up but please don’t. Your efforts are appreciated and you ARE making a difference. 💚🌍

One week today! Get involved 🙂

・・・
As part of our Stockingfield Bridge community art project, we are holding two litterpicks along the canal to help to clean up the area and gather metal to be melted down and incorporated into the four paving slabs we are creating to be installed at the bridge, designed using inspiration from drawings by participants of our drawing workshops.

The first pick will take place on Sunday 20th March at 2-4pm. Meet at Lambhill Stables (11 Canal Bank North, Glasgow G22 6RD). We will provide litterpickers, gloves and bags, we just need you!

Get in touch on the Boom! phone if you need to contact us on the day - 07897 905229.

There will be another litterpick on Sunday 3rd April at 2-4pm at a different location, which will be announced soon.

Come and join us to contribute to a permanent artwork while making the canal look great!

✅ Community Hubs via Glasgow Neighbourhood Improvement Volunteer team ✅

We have previously reported on the Glasgow-wide network of Community Hubs based in community centres and other buildings, supporting local communities to tackle local litter issues.

The hubs provide kits containing everything groups will need for a litter picking event, litter-pickers, disposable gloves, high visibility vests, bag hoops, refuse bags, and disinfectant wipes. This will enable local businesses, groups and schools to easily access equipment and keep their neighbourhoods cleaner and safer.

Now, though, two neighbourhoods are piloting bespoke storage units. These are modified versions of street bins, which have been specifically designed to house a full litter clean-up kit. This unit is ideal for parks and open spaces where volunteers and businesses can have secure access to the contents quickly.

Local community groups will manage the storage unit and volunteers can request access to equipment.

Contact us via CommsafetyNIES@glasgow.gov.uk and we will direct you to a group or hub in your area.
