Some reading to get me through the winter 😁, I love learning, I'm always revising and cross referencing and keeping up to date with both old and new theories and methods. And when I'm done reading, I'll probably translate them into Latin as that's a passion of mine too. Have I mentioned that I love my job yet?

Understanding Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder impingement is a common cause of shoulder pain, often affecting athletes, manual workers, and individuals who perform repetitive overhead movements. It occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff become compressed or irritated as they pass through the narrow space beneath the acromion (the top part of the shoulder blade).

Causes
Repetitive overhead activities such as swimming, painting, or lifting
Poor posture, especially rounded shoulders or forward head position
Muscle imbalances or weakness in the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers
Bone spurs or structural narrowing of the shoulder joint

Symptoms
Pain when lifting the arm, especially overhead
Discomfort when reaching behind the back
Weakness or stiffness in the shoulder
Pain that worsens at night or when lying on the affected side.

Treatment
Rest and activity modification: Avoid movements that aggravate pain.
Physical therapy: Strengthening and stretching exercises to restore balance and mobility.
Anti-inflammatory measures: Ice, medication, or ultrasound therapy to reduce inflammation.
Posture correction: Improving shoulder and upper back alignment.

Prevention
Warm up before physical activity.
Maintain good posture throughout the day.
Strengthen rotator cuff and scapular muscles.
Avoid repetitive overhead movements when possible.

Early recognition and proper management of shoulder impingement can prevent chronic pain and restore full shoulder function.

Appointments available Mon-Sun 8am-8pm

Pain that worsens at night or when lying on the affected side

Diagnosis

A healthcare professional may perform physical tests, assess range of motion, and use imaging such as X-rays or MRI to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions like rotator cuff tears.

In severe cases: Corticosteroid injections or surgical decompression may be considered.

Prevention

Warm up before physical activity.

Maintain good posture throughout the day.

Strengthen rotator cuff and scapular muscles.

Avoid repetitive overhead movements when possible.

Key takeaway: Early recognition and proper management of shoulder impingement can prevent chronic pain and restore full shoulder function.

Do you suffer with Carpal tunnel syndrome?

Do you know that massage can help carpal tunnel syndrome by reducing pressure on the median nerve, which is compressed by swollen tendons in the wrist. Techniques like myofascial release and deep tissue massage can break up scar tissue, drain excess fluid, and lengthen tight muscles and tendons in the hand, forearm, and wrist. This can lead to relief from pain, numbness, and tingling, and improve range of motion.
How massage helps
👉Reduces pressure: It reduces pressure on the median nerve by breaking up scar tissue adhesions and decreasing swelling in the wrist's carpal tunnel.
👉Decreases swelling: Techniques like myofascial release can help drain excess fluid that builds up around the tendons.
👉Relieves muscle tension: Massage lengthens and relaxes the muscles and tendons of the hand and forearm that can contribute to compression.
Improves blood circulation: Enhanced blood flow can aid healing and reduce inflammation.
👉Increases range of motion: By addressing tight tissues, massage can improve flexibility and range of motion in the wrist and fingers.

Common massage techniques
👉Myofascial Release: This technique focuses on breaking up adhesions and restrictions within the fascia, the connective tissue surrounding the muscles and tendons.
👉Trigger Point Therapy: This involves applying pressure to specific trigger points in the muscles to release tension.
👉Deep Tissue/Sports Massage: These can lengthen and stretch the muscles, diminishing their size and alleviating pressure.
*️⃣Important considerations
Massage therapy can provide both immediate relief and long-term improvement, but it often requires multiple sessions for lasting results.
