Did you know that in Hampshire, Google searches for “seasonal affective disorder” are more than three times higher in November than the average for the rest of the year?

Although only around 2% of people in the UK are diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder, winter can be a challenging time for many of us. Shorter days and colder weather often make it harder to stay positive and energised. Our Winter Wellbeing training session is here to help you prepare and protect your mental health during the season ahead. 💙
Together, we’ll explore practical tips and techniques - from simple breathing exercises to ways of staying connected and active. You’ll leave with ideas you can use straight away to support yourself and those around you. ❄️

Book your place today and give yourself the tools to feel more resilient this winter: www.solentmind.org.uk/winter-training

Content warning: mentions of su***de

It's and we’re celebrating the people who help guide and shape Solent Mind behind the scenes - our trustees.

From lived experience to leadership in a range of sectors, our trustees bring a wealth of knowledge, compassion and commitment to our purpose: to support everyone to develop positive mental wellbeing, live well and thrive.

A special mention to Ruth Poyner, who has recently stepped up to take on a new co-chair role alongside Claire Lowe. 💙

Ruth draws on over 20 years’ experience of working across the charity sector and her own lived experience having lost three beloved family members to su***de, Ruth is deeply committed to Solent Mind’s purpose.

Thank you to Ruth, Claire and all our trustees for your dedication, insight and care. Your voices help us stay rooted in our values and focused on what matters most - people.

What a night! Our Halloween Quiz Night brought together 33 teams for an evening of fun and friendly competition - all in support of better mental health across Hampshire. 🎃

We were thrilled to welcome a lovely mix of local companies and teams of family and friends, who together raised over £5,000 to support Solent Mind - an amazing total and a Quiz Night record! Your generosity helps us continue providing life-changing mental health services in our community - thank you. 💙

Congratulations to our winning quiz team ‘Plata-Geists’ and a huge shout-out to our event sponsors, Sindall Construction and Sindall Infrastructure, our raffle prize donors, and to the fabulous Liquor - thanks for hosting the evening with real pzazz, getting everyone laughing, cheering and on their feet for the time warp!

To everyone who took part, volunteered, or cheered us on - you made such a difference and we’re so grateful.

As fireworks light up the skies this week, it’s important to remember that not everyone experiences Bonfire Night the same way. 🎆

For survivors of trauma and people living with PTSD, the loud bangs, bright flashes and unexpected noises can be deeply distressing. These triggers can bring back painful memories and heighten feelings of anxiety.

If you’re celebrating, please consider:

Letting neighbours know in advance if you’re planning fireworks.
Choosing organised displays over garden fireworks.
Being mindful of those who may need a quieter space.

If you're feeling overwhelmed and in need of urgent support this week, you can drop in to the The Lighthouse in Bitterne and Shirley from 4.30pm - 10.30pm, or the South West Hampshire Safe Haven in Eastleigh from 5pm - 11pm.

Let’s make Bonfire Night safer and more inclusive for everyone. 💙

As the clocks go back and daylight hours shorten, you might have noticed a shift in your moods. 🌙

Having fewer hours of sunlight can affect our wellbeing, and for some it can cause the type of depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

If you’re finding the darker days challenging, you can find simple tips and practical advice to support your mental health in our Winter Wellbeing toolkit. 💙

You can also pause our video and choose a wellness activity whenever you need a moment to recharge.

If low mood is making everyday tasks feel harder, or if you suspect you have SAD, please speak to your GP.

Halloween can be a time to have fun with costumes and treats, but for some it can also feel overwhelming.🎃

From unexpected scares to new social pressures, this time of year can bring up feelings of anxiety. If that’s how you or someone you know is feeling, you’re not alone - and there are ways to make Halloween feel more manageable.

Here are a few gentle tips to help you or your loved ones feel more at ease:

1. Prepare for the unpredictable: explore your route or activity in advance to reduce uncertainty.

2. Avoid triggering situations: it’s okay to skip the haunted house or choose a quieter way to celebrate.

3. Provide an easy exit: have a plan to leave if things feel too much - and know that’s completely okay.

4. Offer some reassurance: fear is a valid emotion. Listening and accepting it can help you feel more in control.

Let’s make Halloween a little kinder for everyone. 💙

Volunteers are essential to our work at Solent Mind. Their time, energy and compassion help us reach more people and provide vital mental health support across our communities.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who chooses to volunteer with us - and we love hearing how the experience impacts them too. 💙

Here’s what some of our volunteers have shared:

“Volunteering has had a huge impact on my mental wellbeing, and I have found a renewed sense of purpose in supporting others.”

“The staff and volunteers create such a warm, supportive atmosphere.”

Right now, we’re looking for volunteers to help us make our Mental Elf fun run magical! If you’d like to get involved in a festive, family-friendly event that raises awareness and funds for better mental health, we’d love to hear from you! 🎅

Thank you for going with us this World Mental Health Day 💙

Last Friday, we brought our campaign to the heart of Southampton at Westquay to connect with our community, offer support, and spark conversations around mental health.

From mindful art to practical advice from our wellbeing, employment, crisis, and fundraising staff, the day was all about breaking down stigma and making space for open discussions around mental health conditions.

Our Story

Starting in May 1964, we became part of a network of 124 local Minds in England and Wales which are independent charities. We have our own board of trustees, raise our own funds and tailor our support to the needs of people living in Hampshire.

Our approach ensures that people can trust Solent Mind to be on their side:

Open. We reach out to anyone who needs us.

Together. We’re stronger in partnership.
