Hearing is not a 'nice to have' nor a luxury.

It is a necessity.

Lets be clear here, we’re talking about those who are born hearing and lose their hearing during adulthood.

Hearing is so important but no importance appears to be given to hearing in most workplaces.

Recently updated research shows 18 million people have a hearing loss, not the 12 million it last reported (RNID )
Yet, a third of over 50s with hearing loss could be undiagnosed.
That’s a large portion of people living and working with undiagnosed hearing loss. I’ve seen it over the years working as an Audiologist. This is a big problem.

We need workplaces to help break down barriers when it comes to stigma associated with hearing loss.

Employees need to feel safe and supported when at work to talk about any hearing difficulties.

Employers need to accept that hearing can change in their employees and that workplaces can really provide the help to support this through regular hearing checks, and education.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a workplace who understood that hearing is important and deserves to be looked after? Imagine how supported your employees would feel.

We do things differently! Did you know hearing checks at work with Workplace Ear Care aren't your typical hearing services?!

Hearing tests at work are so often associated with noisy industries or health and safety. Yet companies don't provide these as a form of physical health check or wellbeing for those of you who work in quieter places like offices.

Did you know that hearing loss at work is still a problem in quieter places? This is for people who don’t work in noisy environments, the ones who might have wear and tear to their hearing levels, age related losses, illnesses, recreational noise exposure. There is a cohort of people whose hearing troubles are just ignored because no one wants to talk about it; because no one seems to realise this is a problem.

But we do. Over half of people aged 55+ have a hearing loss. People younger than this are experiencing hearing loss. We need to start educating all ages on how to look after their hearing health.

Did you know hearing loss affects
❌ Employee retention
❌ Miscommunication
❌ Productivity

An NHS survey found 41% of people with a hearing loss retired early due to the impact of their hearing loss on their work.

Did you also know that you are more than twice as likely to experience anxiety or depression with a hearing loss?

How do you know you have a hearing loss? Have a hearing check! 1 in 8 people have a hearing loss but they don’t all know it. Our hearing changes gradually over the years so you don’t always notice the changes. Your personalised hearing chart will tell us how your hearing is no matter how small or big the changes are, they can be seen and reported to you.

Would you consider hearing checks at your workplace? What would encourage you to implement this? We’d love to know – get in touch or leave a comment!

Hearing health for employees is often overlooked or neglected in typically quiet workplaces. Dave Miller (Co-Founder of Workplace Ear Care) had a great conversation with Barry Eustance from The Sixsess Consultancy and discussed why hearing checks should be as routine as dental and eye checks within the workplace.

Subtle hearing loss often goes unnoticed.

Untreated hearing loss impacts mental health, communication, and productivity.

How can you make a difference? Provide proactive hearing checks and hearing health education to your employees.

One of the takeaways from this podcast is “Early awareness supports healthier, more engaged workforces.” Which is absolutely true.

Hearing checks need to be normalised at work. Would you implement hearing checks within your workplace to support your employee wellbeing?

What hearing loss support do you offer in your workplace?

Hearing loss in the workplace is different for everyone. There are different journeys, each with unique needs:
➡️ Those entering the workforce with an existing hearing loss
➡️ Those who’ve lived and worked with hearing loss for years
➡️ And those navigating a new change in their hearing during their working lives

While all these groups deserve more recognition and support, it’s the last group who are rarely considered at all.

They’re not on anyone’s radar and they’re not included in most wellbeing strategies.

When someone’s hearing begins to change, they may face:
❌ Denial or confusion about what’s happening
❌ Stigma (especially the myth that hearing loss only affects older people)
❌ Mental health challenges
❌ Uncertainty about what help is available
❌ Fear of speaking up - worried it might affect their job security

At Workplace Ear Care, we focus on proactive support for employees whose hearing may be changing during their working years. Hearing loss doesn’t always come with a warning and it doesn’t always come with age.

That’s why we offer:
✅ Proactive hearing checks
✅ Hearing awareness days
✅ Education for employers and teams

The goal? Early awareness and early intervention. We need the right support to keep people thriving at work.

Let’s make hearing health a standard part of workplace wellbeing, just like eye and dental care.

Multigenerational teams are becoming the norm and with more people working later in life and with more ears than ever under daily strain from headsets and headphones, it’s time we asked should hearing health be a standard part of workplace wellbeing?

Hearing health impacts:
❎ Workplace Inclusion & engagement
❎ Mental wellbeing
❎ Collaboration across generations
❎ Communication / productivity

We need to challenge outdated assumptions – hearing problems are not just for older employees or noisy jobs. Our younger employees are at risk too. It really is time to acknowledge that hearing is important for all ages.

What can workplaces do?

We need to:
👂 Offer regular hearing tests like we do with eye tests
👂 Educate on the social and emotional aspects of hearing
👂 Create psychological safe spaces so hearing can be discussed without stigma
👂 Leaders to model by taking action on hearing health

Conversations are needed around ear and hearing health. We need to prioritise proactive care towards hearing health and ensure all generations benefit.

Contact centres are just one example of workplaces we work with. Dave recently contributed to a Contact Centre magazine article discussing the links between hearing health and mental health which is a link often overlooked. When hearing changes there is an increase in communication difficulties, social isolation and stress. What’s interesting though is that this link is not just exclusive to contact centres, it’s prevalent in many workplaces. Have you ever thought about the link between hearing health and mental health?

Ever found yourself thinking:

• “I can’t hear them.”
• “They’re mumbling.”
• “They’re not speaking clearly.”

What if the issue isn’t them but changes in your own hearing?

Miscommunication is an issue within workplaces but surprisingly few people connect communication struggles to changes in our hearing health.

That’s where we come in. Our straightforward, on-site hearing tests provide immediate insights into your hearing levels. Helping you stay sharp, engaged, and in control of every conversation.

This week is mental health awareness week. As an audiologist I have seen the strong link between our hearing health and mental health.

Untreated hearing loss can lead to an increase in stress, fatigue and social isolation. The struggle to hear subtle sounds, missing out on conversations or having to strain at times to listen can take its toll on our mental health.

Research shows those with a hearing loss are twice as likely to have depression, along with an increased risk in having anxiety. With work-related stress, depression and anxiety leading to a loss of 17.1 million work days in the UK, this is something that can no longer be ignored.

Hearing tests need to become a standard part of workplace wellbeing. They allow employees to stay connected, motivated and reassured. By being proactive with regular hearing checks this can allow for timely intervention should a hearing loss be found. Research shows that intervention with hearing aids help to reduce the risk of depression and enable us to stay socially involved which links into the theme of community for this year’s mental health awareness week.

This mental health awareness week we need to have the discussions about our hearing health. Would you consider this for your employees’ workplace wellbeing?

✨ Deaf awareness week 2025 ✨

Deaf Awareness Week is about inclusion, understanding, and breaking down barriers, and that includes in the workplace.

I love the work I do with Workplace Ear Care. Hearing tests at work are so much more than ‘just’ a hearing test. It sparks up a lot of conversation about hearing loss and the difficulties associated with it, whether that be about people they know, or their own personal experience. This is one of my favourite things as it really helps to build inclusivity and accessibility within the workplace, and in society, because talking about our hearing and those who can’t hear really helps to make it a much less avoided subject.

Talking about how we can include and understand those who are deaf or have hearing loss helps towards putting the correct adaptations in place. Adaptations I’ve required due to my own hearing loss include:

✅ Quiet work spaces for meetings to reduce the interruptive background noise which can sometimes take over the important messages within the meeting.

✅ Colleagues coming over to me to talk if they have a question, rather than shouting across to me, or talking with their back to me. Lip reading and visual cues from people’s faces are a big help when it comes to understanding the conversation. Sometimes I get it wrong so please be kind!

✅ Written notes from meetings/plan to allow myself to follow and understand the topics

Workplace hearing tests show employees there is awareness of hearing loss, reducing stigma around hearing loss, and supporting those who may be struggling silently. Regular hearing checks really help to build an inclusive and supportive workplace.
