🌟 As part of the QI Leaders Pathway Vets for Pets 2024 -Krishna Mistry RVN set out to tackle an aspect of inpatient care: nutrition.

Her project, β€œQuality Nutrition, Quality Care: Improving Pet Health One Calculation at a Time!”, focused on making sure every hospitalised dog and cat has their calorie requirements accurately calculated; a vital part of their recovery.

Through practical changes including redesigned hospital sheets, quick-reference tools, pre-populated charts, and better team training, Krishna and her colleagues boosted the number of Resting Energy Requirement (RER) calculations, ensuring pets receive the nutrition they need to heal.

βœ… The outcome? A significant improvement in accuracy and consistency, leading to better recovery and wellbeing for every patient. 🐢🐾🐱

🌟 As part of the QI Leaders Pathway Vets for Pets 2024 - Kirsty French MRCVS took on the challenge of improving patient care in practice.

🐾 Her project, β€œMe-OW! Recording Patient Post-Operative Pain Scores”, focused on a vital but often overlooked step in pet recovery: routine pain scoring. Without it, pets can miss out on the extra support they need after surgery, especially for β€œroutine” procedures like neutering.

Through simple but effective changes - laminated charts on kennels, pre-printed forms, team training, iPad apps, and posters - Kirsty and her team transformed how post-op pain is monitored.

βœ… The outcome? A significant and sustained rise in pain scoring compliance, ensuring every pet receives the safe, comfortable recovery they deserve. πŸ•πŸΎπŸˆ

Free coaching conversations for Private Healthcare Companies! Do you want to pioneer and lead the way in building QI capacity and capability in private healthcare?

Many organisations struggle with recurring problems:
❓ Staff retention. Do my clinicians have autonomy, flexibility and a well organised setting?
❓ How can we boost our reputation? Is our patient messaging effective?
❓ Could we reduce spend? (for example consumables and energy)
❓ Is our organisation fully invested in integrative care and wellness?
❓ Can QI be used to ensure you are recovering all the available income?

We’ve seen how tested Quality Improvement (QI) methods can break those cycles and create lasting change.

If you’re ready to explore a different approach, QIC are offering confidential, pro-bono coaching conversations with private healthcare leaders who want to transform how their teams work - no strings attached. πŸ’‘

Message us if you’d like to be part of shaping what β€œnext-level QI” looks like in private healthcare.

🌍 Following the World Health Organization (WHO) Patient Safety Day 2025 focus on neonates and maternity, QIClearn mentors are continuing to shine a light on 12 outstanding maternity & neonate QI projects!πŸ’‘

Dr Chido Zhakata from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has chosen to highlight the inspiring QIClearn project:
✨ β€œGoing for Gold! Improving within-the-hour administration of antibiotics in critically unwell neonates.” β±οΈπŸ’‰

This project tackles a vital challenge in neonatal care: ensuring timely antibiotic delivery for babies at highest risk of sepsis. Delays in treatment can have life-threatening consequences, and this project exemplifies how structured quality improvement can lead to safer, faster, and more effective care for our smallest patients. An inspiring reminder that every minute truly matters in neonatal medicine.

Huge thanks to our learner Maithili Raju from Barts Health NHS Trust for leading this fantastic work!

🦷 How can A+E play a role in improving children’s oral health? This Quality Improvement project by Rosanne Verow explored how emergency departments can deliver opportunistic public health messages to families - a place where staff see hundreds of children every day.

Through staff microteaching, parent leaflets, and a fun β€œTooth Fairy Leaderboard,” the team encouraged clinicians to ask every child when they last saw a dentist. Early results show stronger staff engagement and more oral health conversations - showing that A+E can be a powerful space for prevention and health promotion.

Next step: exploring if this awareness leads to more children visiting a dentist!
