🆕 New blog post from QIClearn!
✨ When Paediatricians Meet Vets: Surprising Lessons from a Mentor Swap

When Chido (a paediatric doctor) and Nicola (a vet) swapped mentoring groups in our QIClearn programmes, they uncovered surprising parallels:

🔹 Both professions feel overwhelmed by Quality Improvement
🔹 Both battle the pressure to “get it perfect”
🔹 Both communicate with caregivers - just different species!
🔹 Both face similar clinical challenges, from pain scores to lab results

The mentor swap also revealed ways we can better support learners: clearer language, smaller groups, and safe spaces to share “imperfect” questions.

And the biggest insight?
👉 Stepping into someone else’s world shows just how much we all have in common.

🌍 Following the World Health Organization (WHO) Patient Safety Day 2025 focus on neonates and maternity, QIClearn mentors are continuing to shine a light on 12 outstanding maternity & neonate QI projects!💡

Dr Rasheed Kaja Mohammad, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Foundation Trust has chosen to highlight
✨ Sebastian Brown's QI project, 'Training Trainees to Train Trainees'.

Dr Rasheed Kaja Mohammad says:
"This poster focuses on specific needs of Paediatric Residents for feedback as well as more general implication and relevance to other healthcare areas. The topic of training early stage trainers is very nuanced and complex but Quality Improvement as a potential approach is interesting and worthy of attention. The poster itself depicts a coherent story, easy to understand and pleasingly presented and at the same time QI methodology has been used in logical steps."

🌟 As part of the QI Leaders Pathway Vets for Pets 2024 - Nicola Whitelam BVSc MRCVS explored how to improve prescription writing for flea and worming treatment within routine appointments.

✍️ Her project, “To Script or Not To Script?”, examined the effectiveness of using repeated verbal reminders to increase the number of prescriptions issued at the time of consultation, thereby supporting preventative healthcare and reducing delays when forward-facing prescriptions had not been prepared in advance.

✅ The result? Valuable insights into communication and how verbal reminders lead to positive change but have the potential to be labour intensive creating the need for a more sustainable solution.

🌟 As part of the QI Leaders Pathway Vets for Pets 2024 -Krishna Mistry RVN set out to tackle an aspect of inpatient care: nutrition.

Her project, “Quality Nutrition, Quality Care: Improving Pet Health One Calculation at a Time!”, focused on making sure every hospitalised dog and cat has their calorie requirements accurately calculated; a vital part of their recovery.

Through practical changes including redesigned hospital sheets, quick-reference tools, pre-populated charts, and better team training, Krishna and her colleagues boosted the number of Resting Energy Requirement (RER) calculations, ensuring pets receive the nutrition they need to heal.

✅ The outcome? A significant improvement in accuracy and consistency, leading to better recovery and wellbeing for every patient. 🐶🐾🐱
