✨ As March for Preceptorship comes to a close, we’re celebrating by sharing a look at where the journey begins. Induction Day for our newest cohort. ✨

Preceptorship is an important part of supporting newly qualified staff, giving them space to build confidence, gain practical insight, and settle into their roles with guidance.

Last week, our latest preceptees came together for a day filled with introductions, connection, and learning. They enjoyed Introduction Bingo to get to know one another and took part in sessions including fundamentals of care, patient pathway scenarios, and a really valuable Q&A with experienced colleagues.

It’s been a wonderful month highlighting preceptorship, and we can’t wait to see how this new cohort develops over the coming year.💙

Dementia patients at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) are enjoying new ways to stay connected and stimulated, thanks to the donation of an interactive touch screen table from insurance company Ageas.

The device, introduced to Bassett ward earlier this month, allows patients to draw, play games together, and even video call family members — helping to reduce feelings of isolation and encourage social engagement. The table has a 43 inch interactive touch screen, built in Wi-Fi and can be used in both landscape and portrait.

It was organised with the help of Norman Bainbridge, a volunteer on Bassett ward, and is the latest donation from Ageas, who have previously supported the ward with items such as lifelike robotic therapy cats and large dementia-friendly wall clocks.

Jenny’s journey started at 19, unsure of her future but certain she wanted to help people. That first role as a Healthcare Support Worker at UHS changed everything.

With support from her team, access to training and opportunities to progress, she went on to become a registered nurse, then a specialist nurse, and is now a Cardiac Nurse Practitioner studying for her master’s degree.

Her story shows just how far a Healthcare Support Worker role can take you and how UHS supports you at every step. 💙

Meningitis can affect anyone, but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults, and can become very serious if not treated quickly.

We understand that recent reports may cause concern, but the risk of Meningitis B (MenB) to people outside the Kent area is currently considered low.

Our emergency department is extremely busy, and should only be used for life‑threatening injury or illness.

As we bring this year’s Winter Well campaign to a close, Sarah Swanton, associate director of site operations, shares a heartfelt thank you to everyone whose actions helped keep our staff and patients safe throughout the winter months.

Your choices helped protect the most vulnerable people in our care, reduced the spread of illness and supported our teams.

As we move forward, the same simple steps continue to make a big difference:
🤧 Stay away from our hospitals when unwell
🧼 Follow good infection prevention practices
🏠 Support timely discharge when loved ones are ready to return home
💉 Get vaccinated when invited

Together, we can keep patients safe, ease pressure on services and ensure care is available for those who need it most.

UHS doctors who pioneered the use of a revolutionary non-surgical treatment for kidney cancer have welcomed new NICE guidelines which recommend it should be rolled out across the NHS.

The treatment, known as thermal ablation, is a minimally invasive technique that uses image-guided needles or probes to destroy cancerous or abnormal tissue by applying extreme temperatures – either heat or cold – directly to the site of a tumour.

As it is less invasive and avoids damage to surrounding healthy tissue, most people experience far less pain, a quicker return to normal activities and a much shorter recovery time compared to traditional surgical options – with similar outcomes.

The new guidance, published today, forms part of wider national efforts to improve access to evidence based cancer therapies and ensure better outcomes for patients.

Cryoablation was pioneered at UHS in 2008 by consultant abdominal radiologist Dr David Breen – and Southampton remains at the forefront of CT-guided ablation within the UK for kidney and liver tumours.

David Stanley (pictured) underwent cryoablation at UHS in 2024, helping him overcome kidney cancer with minimal side effects.

He said: “Given my circumstances and the previous procedures I’d had, cryoablation was very much recommended as the most suitable treatment for my kidney cancer. The procedure itself made very little impact on my daily life – I recovered ever so quickly.”
