As winter puts extra pressure on our health, now is the perfect time to check in with your body ❄️🩺

Thanks to funding from Southampton Hospitals Charity UK, the SISU Health Station is back in our main entrance — giving our patients and visitors quick, free, self‑service health checks in under five minutes.

Medically certified and easy to use, it measures blood pressure, BMI, heart rate, body composition and more — while also helping to identify alcohol-related and physical activity risks and calculate heart age.

Users receive instant personalised feedback and the machine has the capability to flag high blood pressure and BMI with a GP if the user has consented for that information to be shared.

Designed for privacy, accessibility and early risk detection, the health station makes preventive health simple and actionable for everyone.

We’re celebrating a big milestone for a national study led in Southampton 🎉

Congratulations to the UNIVERSAL team at UHS and the Southampton Clinical Trials Unit. They've now reached their target of 1,000 participants! 👏

The study is investigating the impact of severe respiratory viruses on patients and the NHS.

Professor Tom Wilkinson explains: “This study came about as we wanted to build upon vast amounts of knowledge and experience gained from treating people with COVID-19.

“The results will hopefully pave the way for more targeted care and better treatments for patients with severe respiratory infections.”

We are delighted that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) service has been awarded the highest overall rating possible by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). 🌟 🚁

The service, which is funded by HIOWAA Charity and run in conjunction with UHS, has been rated ‘Outstanding’ following a comprehensive inspection by the independent regulator in October 2025.

The collaboration between HIOWAA and UHS was formally established in November 2018 to strengthen integration between the air ambulance charity and NHS services.

This enabled an expansion of the critical care team – made up of doctors, paramedics and dispatchers – to bring hospital-level care to patients, day and night, 365 days a year.

The helipad at Southampton General Hospital is one of the few in the UK that can receive critically ill patients 24 hours a day, every day.

Rachel Leaman, Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) care group manager at UHS, said: “This rating speaks to the determination of our clinical team to place our patients and people first. Our team is innovative and driven but also, honest and compassionate. It’s a combination which has led to fantastic service development but has also created a culture of shared purpose and support.

“We’re incredibly proud to serve patients across our region and delighted that the CQC recognised the outstanding clinical care that’s provided every day.”

UHS has today stood down the major incident that was declared as a result of the fire that broke out in the west wing of Southampton General Hospital on February 1.

Some of our services remain impacted as a result of a large part of our estate being severely damaged.

We will be in touch directly with patients whose appointments are disrupted and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If we do not contact you please attend your appointments as planned.

We would continue to ask that you consider other urgent treatment services including pharmacy first and urgent treatment centres if your condition is not life or limb threatening and also support the discharge of loved ones. This allows us to free up vital beds for those who need our care the most.

We remain grateful to our community and regional partners for all their support throughout the management of this incident.

Our thanks go to our staff for their hard work and dedication in enabling us to return as many services as possible, so we can continue to provide safe care for our patients.

The fire in the West Wing of Southampton General Hospital has had a huge impact.

Many of our teams have been working in unfamiliar environments, supporting patients who have been moved, and doing everything we can to keep services running safely under immense pressure.

We’re incredibly grateful that Southampton Hospitals Charity UK is supporting us by providing:
💙 Wellbeing support for staff as we adapt to new workspaces and difficult circumstances
💙 Essential items for patients who have temporarily lost access to their belongings

Help us to continue supporting our patients and staff by donating to the Fire Recovery Appeal 👇

The fire in the West Wing of Southampton General Hospital has had a significant impact on patients, on services, and on staff who are continuing to work under immense pressure.

As a charity, we’ve already committed £12,500 to provide immediate support:

💙 Wellbeing support for staff working in unfamiliar and challenging circumstances
💙 Essential items for patients temporarily unable to access their belongings

But we know there is more to do.

This is Phase 1 of our appeal - focused on supporting the people affected right now.

A donation to our Fire Recovery Appeal will help us step in with practical assistance, so we’re ready when patients and staff at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust need us most.

If you’re able to support our hospital community during this difficult time, any donation - large or small - will make a real difference.

We are continuing to respond to the major incident following the fire in the west wing of Southampton General Hospital on Sunday morning.

Several areas of the hospital remain closed due to fire, smoke, or water damage. As a result, some outpatient appointments that would normally take place in person may be changed to a telephone or virtual consultation.

All patients with a prearranged appointment will be informed in advance about how their appointment will take place.

If you have an appointment and have not been contacted, please attend as planned.

You can find more information about virtual consultations on our website: https://www.uhs.nhs.uk/for-patients/video-clinics

Thank you to everyone who has supported our hospital during this major incident. We recognise the additional pressures this has placed across our wider healthcare system and we are grateful to our partners for their continued support.

To help them – and to help us – please choose well when seeking care, using the most appropriate service for your needs.

University Hospital Southampton remains on major incident today as we continue our response to the fire in the west wing of Southampton General Hospital on Sunday morning.

As we work to recover following the fire, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our staff, we have reopened our Emergency Department and resumed a limited amount of elective surgery, prioritising the most urgent cases.

The majority of outpatient appointments are going ahead and we are asking patients to continue to attend the hospital as planned unless they have been contacted directly.

Our teams are also working hard to reunite patients moved during the fire with their personal belongings. We are asking people to please contact the Patient and Family Support Hub on 0800 4840135 to arrange collection.

University Hospital Southampton remains in a major incident today following a fire in the West Wing of Southampton General Hospital on Sunday morning.

When the fire broke out approximately 200 patients were quickly moved to safe areas of the hospital including corridor spaces during the emergency. Following a considerable effort throughout yesterday in repurposing all available space in our hospitals, last night all of those patients were being cared for in beds and on wards. The majority remained in Southampton General Hospital, but some patients were transported to hospitals across the area last night in a coordinated mutual aid response with healthcare partners and supported by South Central Ambulance Service.

The situation has been extremely challenging and we are continuing to work with partners as we continue to prioritise safe patient care.

Our Emergency Department remains closed this morning unless your condition is life or limb threatening.

We have had to cancel a significant amount of planned elective surgery and some outpatient appointments today. All affected patients have been contacted directly. If you have an appointment and have not been contacted, you should attend the hospital as planned today.

Visiting has today resumed as usual – please check visiting hours with the ward.

We would like to thank our staff and community for how they have responded to the major incident we declared earlier today following a fire at Southampton General Hospital.

We moved more than 200 patients to other areas of our hospital where they are being cared for by our staff.

Our focus continues to be safe patient care and moving them to other wards and departments across our site.

We have identified a number of patients who are able to be discharged today and families will be contacted this afternoon to make suitable arrangements for their collection.

Our phone lines continue to be extremely busy – please refrain from calling where possible, allowing our staff to focus on the response effort.
