Quality Time Training have been teaching powerboaters, sailors and seafarers since the early 1990s and have a great reputation for living up to their company name. With the spiralling costs of business overheads, they have made the tough decision to hand the helm over to Chieftain Training.

The centre at Portland Marina is closing. After a successful career Bob is retiring. Meanwhile Claire will focus on, Panther Yacht Racing
Chieftain Training - RYA & STCW Courses is expanding and will continue to offer a range of courses to Quality Time customers from our training Centre in Southampton. We intend to live up to the Quality name you are familiar with. Doug and Becky wish Bob and Claire all the best.

Well it’s a sad day for the team at Quality Time Training today we’ve officially run our last course !

We would like to thank all our customers, instructors and suppliers for their support over the years

Bob Elliott has been training in the Weymouth and Portland area for 30 to years, I joined the team nearly 10 years ago and over these years we have trained thousands of students, delivered hundreds of boats around the world, been involved in filming, safety work and lots of other interesting projects

It’s been a pleasure and an honour to be involved in so many peoples boating journeys and a delight to work with so many amazing skippers and instructors

I for one have made some of my best mates through boating ( you know who you are) and also met some interesting characters !!!

There is definitely some funny stories we could tell about our boating adventures and no doubt we will !

Massive thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years

Six races for the price of one! This is your chance to race round the beautiful Cotentin Peninsula and the Channel Islands. The Tour Des Ports De La Manche is an established French Race which progresses in 6 day-stages moving around ports in France and the Channel Islands. The racing is competitive, tactical and scenic but ends in a party in the port that hosts you for that night

The Tour Des Ports De La Manche is an established French Race which progresses in 6 day-stages moving around ports in France and the Channel Islands. The racing is competitive, tactical and scenic but ends in a party in the port that hosts you for that night.

The whole race has an enormously friendly vibe which you won’t forget. This is incredible value for this event which runs between St Vaast, Cherbourg, Dielette, Guernsey, Carteret, Jersey and Granville. Full details are on our website.

If you fancy doing the Round The Island Race on a competitive boat then the chance is still there! Due to a last minute cancellation we have the last two places available on Panther, our Reflex 38. We will be based in Shepards, Cowes, and running a practice day on the Friday. If you want to join us contact us by email or phone us for a chat. If you can’t make the practice day don’t worry. We run a very calm but competitive yacht with a professional skipper and first mate.

Our Chief Sailing Instructor, Andy Young, recently led a Coastal Skipper Course and had these thoughts to offer.
“The Coastal Skipper Course is really my favourite course to run because it’s low stress, it offers you the chance to go to interesting places (both navigationally and just to visit) and you can see the improvement in peoples confidence. It’s aimed at undertaking more demanding passages and so I aim to be working around the Channel Islands and Brittany, this scares most people but if you can cruise here you can do it anywhere!”

The recent course made its way from Portland to St Peter Port, St Malo (where the crew went on strike and demanded to stay a second night, although Andy suspects this was to do with the restaurant he guided them to). Then to St Quay-Portrieux, Alderney and back to Portland through the Channel, coping with fog banks on the way. The tidal ranges and rates are pretty much as big as they go and the navigation is demanding.

Andy said “I love the fact that you can see that people taking on more challenging passages as skippers during and after the course and I am a great believer in letting people make mistakes provided it’s safe to do so. I think it will be the last time those skippers opt to come back to Portland via West Shambles on an ebbing spring tide. It took us ruddy hours!!”.
