Sam Shepherd started Valasta in 2018, in the USA, following 8 years of research into the benefits of micro algae on chronic disease, as well as general health, fitness, anti-ageing. As an algae research scientist and biochemical engineer, Sam began studying the effects of astaxanthin on his own cancer, after he developed leukaemia in 2000. From his own personal studies, he hoped that astaxanthin could potentially offer a solution to his own blood cancer. Although astaxanthin is readily available from many different producers, most of the research efforts were focused at developing a version which is the most highly absorbable. Sam experimented with many different methods in order to get the astaxanthin molecules to be mixed at a molecular level with the fat molecules within the olive oil mixture. Without this the fat and the astaxanthin separate not much actual astaxanthin makes it past the stomach acid. He also experimented with different dose for individual health requirements. Thankfully Sam has been cancer free for many years now.
