What to Expect from Couples Counselling / Relationship Therapy

Most people's idea of what couples counselling is like, is from tv shows or the movies, but just as falling in love is never like it is in the movies, the same applies to counselling.

So, what can you expect from couple counselling or relationship therapy?

For the first session, the couple attend together. Each partner is encouraged to talk about how they see the difficulties they're having in the relationship. During this session I hope to get an idea what's important to them and what they want from each other.

The following two sessions will be individual sessions which allow you to express yourself alone. Most people really enjoy this one to one attention.

Mostly the sessions will be with both of you as it's helpful for you to hear what your partners concerns are but throughout the therapy there will be opportunities for individual sessions if needed.

Relationship therapy can help to put the pieces together and overcome feeling disconnected. It can also lead you to accepting that a relationship may be over.

You may feel the spark has gone from your relationship, navigating a new one or not in a relationship at all. Working together, the focus is on breaking patterns of behaviour that may have a negative impact on your relationship and life.
