"Many parents [...] have already tried reducing or eliminating children's misbehaviours by giving them consequences such as taking away privileges or eliminating the use of a favourite toy. They have also tried supporting good behaviour using a sticker chart or other rewards. These methods often fail because the parent does not recognise the child's underlying negative belief about himself or does not understand the reason for the child's misbehaviour. [...] approaches that depend on the child's wanting parental approval often do not work until a child's attachment issues are addressed." (Booth & Jernberg, 2010)

Some of the more profound difficulties around loss (of friends, the summer, stages in life etc) and separation (from parents and family) are not covered. Sensitive children struggle with these universal experiences. Children are biologically ‘programmed’ to stay close to parents for safety. Going to school all day requires overriding this. And some children are less ready than others to explore.

If your child is anxious about going back to school, here are some things you can do to support them and encourage them to talk about how they’re feeling.
