If you want to be successful in life…

You need to sleep fewer than 6 hours a night.

But you also need to sleep more than 8.

You need to devote all your waking hours to hard work.

But you also need to rest and make time for you.

You need to read all the time.

But also relax.

Measuring ourselves against others’ expectations of how we should live our lives can leave us feeling conflicted, anxious, and depressed.

Measure yourself against yourself. Work with what’s realistic and compassionate for you, set your own goals and award your own trophies.

That way you can break the cycle of anxiety, sleep better, see things differently and get on with life.

The grass is always greener on the side that you water...

I love metaphor.

It can be so easy to feel that the grass is always greener on the other side, especially when we’re bombarded by the social media lives of others who, apparently, live in a state of constant bliss! This can lead us into patterns of negative thought and black and white thinking - assuming that everyone else is leading a more fulfilling life than we are – which in turn gives rise to a cycle of anxiety that interrupts our sleep, leaves us feeling tired and demotivated and stops us enjoying the company of partner, friends and family. And this creates more anxiety.

Recognising these unhelpful comparisons is the first stage of reversing the anxious cycle. Switching away from the comparison with others and focussing our attention and energy on our own lives and needs – watering our own grass – allows us to break the cycle completely.

Did you know that humans are born with only two fears?

The fear of falling and the fear of loud noises.

The rest is learned. Which means it can be unlearned.

And when we unlearn the rest, we can make the cycle of anxiety a thing of the past. We can start to see things differently, sleep better, wake with more energy and motivation, feel better able to be there for our partner and be calmer and more effective at work.

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks and starting on the first one.” – Mark Twain

If we feel overwhelmed with anxiety the idea of resolving it may well seem far too complicated.

But if we start with a small task – “I want to feel calm before I go to sleep” for instance, then the big task can become more attainable.

In fact, the big task often starts to solve itself… if we’re calm when we go to sleep then we’ll automatically sleep better… which means we’re less likely to wake feeling anxious… which means we’ll start the day better motivated and with a clearer head… which means we’ll be more patient with our partner and more effective at work… which means we’ll go to bed less anxious…

The more practiced we become with this positive cycle, the more the negative cycle of anxiety becomes a thing of the past.

"In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, while in practice there is"

(Benjamin Brewster 1882)

I love this quotation!

It may sound self-contradictory, more of a brain-twister than a tongue-twister, but sometimes it’s true.

It can be challenging to take the positive change made in the therapy room and apply it in the real world. That’s why I always rehearse success with my clients within the session, so they leave fully equipped to make lasting change in their lives.

When the boss comes back and queries some information I’ve given him, I think “He’s doubting my ability again!”
When I message my best mate after that party last night and I get no reply, I think “I drank too much and said something that upset them!”
When my partner is suddenly quiet and reserved, I think “it must be my fault, what did I forget to do?!”

This pattern of negative thinking is guaranteed to generate anxiety.

Looking for alternative explanations can be a fantastic way to break this pattern:

“The boss knows he doesn’t understand the detail of the job like I do; he wants more information because he trusts my judgement”
“Maybe my mate’s young child is suddenly sick, and they’ve been in the doctors waiting room for hours”
“Perhaps my partner’s got a migraine and hasn’t told me because they don’t want me to worry”

This might seem a big ask, but most people I work with find with a little practice that it becomes a permanent change, which has a huge positive impact on their anxiety

Autumn. I hate it! I love it! I hate the short days, I hate that winter’s next, I LOVE kicking through the piles of leaves on the street, I LOVE the way you can still feel the sun’s warmth through the cold blue sky! The most contrasting of all seasons don’t you think?
