November 1 marks the start of Movember, a month-long awareness event which takes place throughout November each year. It's aimed at raising awareness of men's mental and physical health.

Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, conducting vital men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men.

'I spent countless nights staying up with her, making sure she got to bed safely, pleading with her that she didn’t need to turn to alcohol anymore.

What I didn’t fully understand at the time was that change has to come from within – no matter how much love, care, and effort you give.

Because of seeing her put herself through this pain, I vowed to channel my own suffering into compassion and action for others.

I witnessed some of the darkest moments of her life on a daily basis, and while it was challenging beyond words, it has shaped me into the person I am today.

Those who have been in my position will understand how painful it is...

Knowing that you can’t control their choices or make the decision for them to change.’

However, registering as a carer with your GP will enable them to support you in your caring role. The support offered by your GP practice will vary, but here are some of the things it may include:

🕐 Flexibility when booking doctor’s appointments, like booking back-to-back appointments if both you and the person you care for need to see the GP

💙 Support with your physical and mental health to enable you to carry out your caring responsibilities

🏥 Free annual health checks

🚚 Having prescriptions delivered to your home
