The Friday group didn't let the storm get in the way of them learning today, we battened down the hatches and got creative making a new display board.

The group have been working hard learning horse colours so each group member picked a colour and made a hama bead pony for the board.

Then this afternoon it was all about hooves, Max did a fabulous job of modeling the bottom of a hoof out of play doh and labelling it.

It may of rained most of the day and been so wet we found ducks in our back fields but that didn't stop our BHS Changing Lives through horses group from embracing the key life skills of Teamwork and building relationships.

In between learning about lunging, getting to know our new BHS second chance pony and helping with our accessible riding sessions they still found time to have some fun and just be teenagers for a while.

The evening may be dark and cold but that doesn't stop our BHS Pony Stars from learning.

Over the last couple of weeks we have concentrating on the first aid section of their Shetland striders book.

Tonight they learnt about about DR ABC and how to put it into practice if an accident was to occur. They were fabulous and by the end of the session they were all confident in checking for Danger, Response, Airways, Breathing and Circulation. As well as being able to place the patient into the recovery position.

We know our participants have many interests besides horses, and by getting to know what these interests/passions are we can then use these to engage them into learning.

Mia is a keen artist and over the last few weeks she has been looking into horse behaviour and body language. So we set her a challenge. Could she create a Andy Walhol 'Marilyn' style picture but use horse expressions.

What the photos don't show are the hours she put in not only observing our horses and ponies in the fields and taking photos, the research into why they behave in a certain way and looking into Andy Walhol himself.

All her hard work paid off and today she finished this beautiful picture. We are so very proud of all of her hard work and dedication over the last few weeks.

Besides the fun of making the video and learning about rider fitness, yesterday’s group got to watch James Arkley carry out Oakley‘s annual dental check up. They even got to be hands on and have a look and feel around the mouth and teeth.

This hands on approach to learning allows our groups to actively engage with horse biology and make it memorable which in turn increases retention and fosters a deeper connection to the subject matter.

Thank you James for taking time and giving the girls this experience.

At the end of last term our Wednesday BHS Changing Lives through horses group, had a session on horse welfare and rider weight.

They went through all of our horses and worked out suitable weights that they should all carry. (this was also a very sneaky way of getting them to practice their math skills)

They then had a discussion about how as a yard we could monitor that our horses were only carrying suitable weights but not have our riders having to share their weight.

They came up with a colour coded scales that each rider could stand on and then that would match them with a suitable horse or pony.

They then took this idea to Paula and her team, who thought it was such a great idea have put it in place as part of their ongoing commitment to horse welfare.

About us

We are a small team of 1 coach (Kirsty) and 1 assistant (Dakota) who run alongside Fourwinds Equitation centre. We hold a Riding for the Disabled Accessibility mark. This means that all staff have annual training and the yard and horses are inspected to ensure that we reach the Riding for the Disabled standards. We are a very busy growing group who have been running now for just under three years and have held our accessibility mark for the past year.

We cater for both groups and individuals and all sessions are person centred so we work along side our riders, their families and support staff to tailor each session to your own needs and individual goals while having lots of fun along the way.

Of course the stars of our group are our amazing horses who are all picked for their calm, patient unflappable temperaments. We have a great team who come in all different shapes and sizes so we can match you to your perfect partner for your lessons.

As well as lessons we also run fun session in the school holidays for children with additional needs to come and have a go at riding and grooming. On Friday mornings we have a grooming and horse contact social session for anybody who wants contact with horses without the riding.
