Friends of Johnson Community Hospital

Friends of Johnson Community Hospital The Friends of Johnson Community Hospital is a registered charity - supporting the hard working nurses and auxiliary staff and for the comfort of the patients.

Registered Charity No: 214542 SOME HISTORY

On the 7th June 2014, The League of Friends of Johnson Community Hospital celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Celebration in the grounds of Johnson Community Hospital. The League of Friends of Spalding Hospitals, now known as the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital, was formed by a group of ladies headed by Nellie Fowler and a local bank manager. The aim was to care for the well-being and comfort of patients at the Johnson Hospital and the Mintling Home in Pinchbeck Road, later to be known as the Avalon Ward which was situated opposite the Johnson Hospital. Some years later, the Avalon hospital was re-located to Roman Bank in Spalding and was called the Welland Hospital. The League's aim in those early days was to provide toiletries, confectionery, outings and gifts for patients to make their stay in hospital a little more comfortable. Today, those aims continue, with a trolley shop manned by the friends giving a friendly smile and stopping for a chat. The patients also receive a gift at Christmas and on Mothering Sunday. Johnson Hospital was founded through a bequest in the wills of the Misses Elizabeth Ann and Mary Ann Johnson, daughters of the Reverend Walter Maurice Johnson, and dedicated by the Bishop of Lincoln in 1881. The cost of the building and equipping the hospital was £9044.9s.4d. In 1981, a group of business people launched the Centenary Appeal providing and equipping an Outpatients' Department in Priory Road which was a very welcome and well used facility. In 2010, HRH Princess Anne was invited to formally open the new hospital. She spent a happy time with staff and patients making it a very special day of celebration. The new name "The Johnson Community Hospital" depicts the special relationship with all the people of South Holland. It is "our" hospital where the doctors, nurses and staff are perpetuating the ideals laid down so many years ago. THE PRESENT DAY

The League of Friends is a registered charity - Charity Number 214542 - with trustees drawn from organisations and individuals in the local community wishing to support the hospital. As technology has advanced in recent years, the Friends have raised funds to provide equipment that would not have been possible through the NHS. In recent years, the League has launched appeals for scanners and other hi-tech equipment which have been generously supported with donations from businesses and voluntary organisations within the town and district. The hospital is fully equipped but there is always a need for additional equipment to improve the services and comfort of those attending the hospital. In the first six years since occupying the new hospital the Friends have purchased medical equipment and gifts in excess of £44,000.00 None of this would have been possible without the generous support from donations and legacies from businesses, voluntary organisations and the good people of South Holland and beyond.

It is always a pleasure for the Friends to support requests like this, where a simple item can make such a positive difference. Of course, none of these purchases would be possible without the continued support and generosity of our local community.

Sensory Lamp For The Blood Clinic

The Friends of Johnson Community Hospital were recently approached by the Blood Clinic with a request to purchase a sensory lamp for their department. We were only too pleased to help.

The lamp has been placed in the “Fish Room”, which is used for paediatric blood tests. Having a blood test can be an anxious experience, especially for children, and even for adults, so the sensory lamp will be used as a gentle distraction to help make the experience a little less daunting.

We are pleased to share a photo of Clinical Health Care Support Worker, Atlanta Marshall, with the new sensory lamp. Atlanta, who originally requested the item, is pictured in the Fish Room where the lamp will be used to support young patients during their visit.

Rebecca Mills, Senior Admin Assistant, said: “Many thanks to League of Friends for this donation which will hugely benefit our patients.”

Happy Mothering Sunday

Yesterday, members of the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital visited the hospital with floral tributes for all the lady patients. This has become a much-loved tradition for our charity and one that we are always delighted to continue each year.

Mothering Sunday can be a particularly difficult time for anyone who finds themselves in hospital, when they would much rather be at home surrounded by family and friends. The Friends hope that these small floral gifts bring a little joy and a reminder that people in the community are thinking of them.

The smiles and kind words from the patients mean a great deal to our members and remind us why the work of the Friends is so rewarding. It is only a small gesture, but one that we hope brightens the day for those spending Mothering Sunday on the ward.

Of course, gestures such as this would not be possible without the wonderful support we receive from our local community throughout the year. Your generosity allows the Friends to continue providing little extras that help make a stay in hospital more comfortable.

From all of us at the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital, we wish everyone a very Happy Mothering Sunday.

We are a welcoming group who work well together and find it incredibly rewarding to support a hospital that so many of us in the Spalding community rely on.

Could you spare a little time to make a big difference?

The Friends of Johnson Community Hospital are looking for volunteers to join our friendly and dedicated team.

We meet around four times a year to share ideas, raise awareness of our charity, and plan how we can raise funds to provide extra comforts for patients and support for our hard working nursing staff.

While the hospital is well equipped, it’s often the little things that make the biggest difference - umbrellas for ambulance staff, privacy screens, toys for the blood clinic and urgent treatment centre, and many other thoughtful touches that help make visits more comfortable.

We are a welcoming group who work well together and find it incredibly rewarding to support a hospital that so many of us in the Spalding community rely on.

If you would like to be part of our team, we would love to hear from you. Please contact us by email at info@friendsofjohnsonhospital.co.uk or send us a private message here on Facebook.

Fenchurch House Care Home Coffee Morning

The Friends were kindly invited by Hannah Mills, to attend a Coffee Morning at Fenchurch House Care Home recently, and we were only too delighted to accept. We are always grateful for the warm support Fenchurch House Care Home gives to our Charity, and it was lovely to spend time there once again.

During the morning, Hannah introduced us to Hayleigh Warrener, Customer Care Officer for Adult Social Care in the Spalding area. Over coffee and cake, we had a really informative and relaxed chat, learning more about the ways in which Hayleigh and her team can help people who need support to remain independent in their own homes and within the community.

Hayleigh has very kindly written a couple of paragraphs, which we are pleased to share here, along with links to further information. We hope this will be helpful to anyone who may need support themselves, or who knows someone who might benefit from a little extra help. It was reassuring to learn just how much support is available and how accessible these services can be.

"Adult Social Care can provide information and advice on a range of services and support available within an individual’s local area. This may include signposting to relevant organisations and services, such as Lifelines, key safes, and guidance around Lasting Power of Attorney (LPOA), to name just a few.

Our aim is to support individuals in the community with the least level of intervention necessary, helping them to remain independent and living in their own homes wherever possible.

Adult Social Care can also support with day-to-day needs, including meals, personal care (such as washing, dressing, and toileting), and other essential tasks. Please note that a full Care and Support Needs Assessment would be required to determine whether an individual meets the eligibility criteria for support. Following this, a financial assessment would take place, as a financial contribution towards care may be required. There is also a financial threshold that individuals must meet in order to receive funded support.

Not only did Friends’ members enjoy a welcoming and friendly Coffee Morning, but we also came away better informed about how Adult Social Care can make a real difference within our community.

Our sincere thanks go to Hannah and everyone at Fenchurch House Care Home for inviting us once again and for continuing to support the Friends in such a thoughtful way.

I’ve had this cat in my garden, Meadow Close/Crossgate area. They are very sweet, playful and cute but they look like they might be a house cat and I just wondered if anyone’s looking for them.

Every time I go to my door they chase as though they want to come in.

I’ve not fed them and more than happy to leave them to it in the garden roaming around.
