⚠️ Did you know that poor manual handling is one of the most common causes of workplace injury in the UK? ⚠️

According to the Health and Safety Executive, manual handling injuries such as lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling loads incorrectly, account for a significant number of workplace musculoskeletal disorders each year.

Many of these incidents are preventable when the right controls are in place.

Please see below a structured approach to manual handling, and what it should always include.

• Risk assessment – identifying tasks that involve lifting or moving loads
• Task design – reducing unnecessary lifting or repetitive movements
• Mechanical aids – using equipment where possible to reduce strain
• Training and awareness – ensuring staff understand safe techniques
• Ongoing monitoring – reviewing tasks regularly to identify improvement opportunities

When organisations take a proactive approach to identifying and controlling these risks, they not only protect their workforce, but also improve productivity and operational consistency.

Is this something you need in place for your business? Please get in touch with us today and we can discuss what we can offer you!

⚠️ Did you know?⚠️

Combustible dust can pose a serious explosion risk in the workplace?

It is a hazard that is often very much overlooked. Industries that handle materials such as wood, flour, sugar, grain, or certain metals can unknowingly create the right conditions for a dust explosion.

For an explosion to occur, five elements must be present (sometimes called the dust explosion pentagon):

• Combustible dust
• Oxygen in the air
• An ignition source (spark, heat, or static)
• Dust suspended in the air
• A confined space

Simple preventative steps can significantly reduce the risk, such as:

• Installing effective dust extraction systems
• Keeping work areas clean and preventing dust build-up
• Controlling potential ignition sources
• Maintaining equipment regularly
• Carrying out proper risk assessments

Awareness is one of the most important tools in preventing workplace incidents.

At BJW Health & Safety Ltd, we produce free weekly health & safety bulletins covering practical advice, updates, and lesser-known risks that businesses should be aware of.

If you’d like to be added to the list, feel free to get in touch.

“SAFETY SPOTLIGHT!”

LONE WORKING CAN HAPPEN MORE OFTEN THAN PEOPLE REALISE.

“Those people in the next room, or upstairs on site, or on their break, may not necessarily be responsible for your safety, they aren’t colleagues or supervisors/managers.”

“Lone workers are exposed to all the exact same risks and hazards an anyone else as if they weren’t working alone - the issue is that they become more vulnerable and emergencies or incidents take longer to manage, control or respond to as there’s no one else there”

Do you want to be added to our Bulletin list? Comment below or send us a message and we can add you on our list! 📩

⭐ Double 5⭐ Feedback for Team BJW! ⭐

We’re proud to share some fantastic feedback received this week for both our Training Director, Brian Wilson, and our Business Manager, Sam Leyland.

Following our recent IOSH Managing Safely Refresher course delivery, we were told:

“We have spoken to the operators who attended the course, and they all said the same thing. The course was brilliant, and Brian was a brilliant teacher. He was engaging with the staff and engaged them really well in the course.”

Engaging delivery and real impact in the classroom is exactly what we aim for — and it’s great to see that reflected so clearly.

We also received 5⭐ feedback for Sam, highlighting the “everlasting impression” he made, along with his passion and professionalism when discussing health and safety.

🔎 DID YOU KNOW?

Health & Safety legislation is updated and reviewed regularly — and many businesses don’t realise changes can directly affect their day-to-day operations.

⚠️ A small update in guidance could mean:
• A change to your risk assessments
• New training requirements

• Different reporting procedures

That’s exactly why we send out our:

⭐ Weekly Health & Safety Bulletin ⭐

Each week, we break down:
✅ Key updates
✅ HSE news

“It’s important to remember that extraction works well, as long as it is used correctly. The real win is capturing fumes before they pass through the breathing zone.
“Naturally, a risk assessment should be carried out to determine the correct procedure and measures for your business when conducting welding activities. The best practice will always be to eliminate where possible - can you stop the use of heat and use cold practices instead?”
