On Thursday, Rebecca, our Funeral Director, was proud to attend a very positive meeting focused on making Stafford a more dementia-friendly town.
It was encouraging to see so many people come together, including the newly appointed Chief Constable, Saqib Butt, representatives from the fire service, local businesses, and community groups ā all with a shared goal of better supporting those living with dementia and the people around them.
One of the key takeaways was how small, thoughtful adjustments can have a huge impact. Something as simple as a black mat at an entrance can appear like a hole to someone with dementia, while patterned flooring or curtains may look like moving insects. By understanding this, we can make simple changes to create safer, more welcoming environments for everyone.
It was also fantastic to hear about the initiative at Asda Stafford, introducing quiet hours Monday to Friday between 2.00pm and 3.00pm ā a change that not only supports those living with dementia but also benefits people on the autism spectrum and others who may need a calmer shopping experience. A great example of how small changes can make a big difference.
As a business, this really resonated with us. It highlighted how important it is to continually learn, adapt, and consider the individual needs of the families we support ā especially during such sensitive times.
There was also an important discussion around the support available to those living with dementia after the loss of a partner, and where more can be done. This is something we feel strongly about and are keen to explore further.
Weāre looking forward to being part of this ongoing conversation and helping to raise awareness within our community. Education is key, and together we can make Stafford a more understanding and supportive place for everyone.
If you are involved in supporting people living with dementia, we would love to hear from you.
Our next meeting will take place on Thursday 21st May at 10.00am in the community room at Asda Stafford.
