💬 Medication information for patients
Some patients may have seen recent media coverage about medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These are used to treat type 2 diabetes and sometimes for weight management. Examples include semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide and tirzepatide.
For most people, these medicines are safe and effective. However, the MHRA has reminded healthcare professionals about a very rare side effect called pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
We are sharing this so you know when to seek advice, not to cause concern.
Please contact a healthcare professional urgently if you are taking one of these medicines and develop:
Ongoing or severe tummy pain, especially if it spreads to your back
Feeling sick or vomiting along with the pain
If you are taking a GLP-1 medication that was prescribed privately, it may not show on your GP record, so please let us know.
If you have no symptoms, there is no need to stop your medication or contact the surgery.
If you do have concerns, we are happy to help. You can also report side effects via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
