WHAT IS SUPERVISION IN COUNSELLING?
Supervision is a confidential, collaborative space where counsellors regularly meet with an experienced supervisor to reflect on their work. It’s a professional requirement—and a vital source of support.

WHY DO COUNSELLORS HAVE TO HAVE SUPERVISION?

Because the work is meaningful—and demanding.
Here’s why it matters:

✅ Ethical, Safe Practice
Supervision ensures that counsellors are working in line with ethical frameworks, safeguarding the wellbeing of clients and maintaining professional integrity.

✅ Emotional Wellbeing
Hearing people’s pain, day after day, takes a toll. Supervision provides a safe space to process feelings, prevent burnout, and stay grounded.

✅ Continued Growth
Even the most experienced counsellors face uncertainty. Supervision deepens self-awareness, sharpens clinical thinking, and builds confidence.

✅ Support with Complex Cases
Sometimes we face dilemmas or stuck points. Supervision helps explore those challenges with a clear head—and a second perspective.

It’s not about being watched. It’s about being held—professionally and ethically.
It’s a place to pause, reflect, and grow so we can do the best for our clients—and ourselves.

Grief looks different for everyone. And that's okay.

At Joanne Vogel Counselling, I work with you—without judgment—on a journey through all kinds of loss: not just mourning a death, but endings of relationships, changes in career, moving house, letting go of a beloved pet…even the intangible losses we feel deeply.

A safe space where your experience matters, and your pace is honoured.
Empathic listening and support, helping you explore emotions—from sadness and guilt to relief and confusion.

Let's talk about a topic that affects every single one of us, regardless of age, gender, or background. It's about something that's often hidden behind smiles, emojis, and carefully curated posts – our mental health.
In this fast-paced, hyperconnected world, we've all faced our fair share of challenges and stresses. From the pressure to excel in our careers to the ups and downs of personal relationships, it's essential to remember that it's okay not to be okay sometimes.
But here's the good news: just like physical health, mental health is something we can work on and improve. And it all starts with a simple yet powerful act – talking about it. Let's break the silence surrounding mental health and explore why it's so crucial. The first step in addressing mental health is breaking down the stigma associated with it. By talking openly and honestly about our struggles, we help others realise they're not alone. Sharing our experiences can be a beacon of hope for those who feel isolated in their battles.

If you can't understand why you feel so down in the summer then you need to read this!
Just because we are expected to feel great during the summer months, nicer weather, holidays etc, this doesn't necessarily follow for everyone.
SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is not just confined to the winter months-maybe you like the winter, lots of people do.
Maybe the summer fills you with dread because you fear exposing more of your body in skimpier clothes, or you suffer from allergies. Loneliness can also be felt more as you see people going out more and having barbecues and parties.
Of course, summer can also be very expensive, holidays. child care all add up and in this financial climate things are tough for a lot of people.
If you are feeling any of these things rest assured that you are not alone. It's easy to bottle things up and keep it to yourself, but talking things through with someone you trust can help.

Can you remember when you last felt at peace? Maybe you are good at self-care and give yourself time and space to feel good.
Unfortunately, for many of us this is just not the case and we spend our lives feeling stressed, anxious and generally down.
Maybe your job is stressful and you work long hours, it is sometimes difficult to find a way to release that pressure.
Finding your own way to peace and relaxation is key to having more enjoyment and less stress in your life.
It is a fact of life that nobody is likely to do this for you, so as the title suggests, this is down to you.
The image on this post, although breathtakingly beautiful, is not necessarily somewhere we can go in our day to day lives, but just going for a walk locally - getting out and about and noticing the beauty of nature can help us to put our lives into some perspective.

Everyone has moods, they can be good moods, bad moods, happy or sad, angry or frustrated.
But, when our sad or low moods become frequent or long lasting, this can signal something more serious.
Depression is a common mental health issue that is thought to affect around 1 in 6 people in the UK (Office of National Statistics).
Depression is a constant feeling of sadness or loss of interest in things you would normally enjoy.
Symptoms also include feeling hopeless or helpless and having low self-esteem, having no motivation, feeling irritable and unable to function in your normal way.
Treatments normally involve a combination of lifestyle changes, talking therapy and medication.
So, what causes depression? There are many causes of depression, for instance, an upsetting or stressful life event- bereavement, divorce, illness or job loss for example.
If you feel that none of these apply to you, this does not mean that you are not depressed and can still seek help.
It is important to remember that you are not alone and many people are in a similar position.
Talking to your GP is a good first step and can start your journey to recovery.

If you read the news, chances are you have heard something or someone about menopause. Unlike in my mother's day, it is now something to talk about and understand. Most women will go through menopause, usually around their 50's and some will get through it quickly and with fairly little bother.
However, for some women it can be devastating in that their symptoms will be many and varied. There are too many symptoms to list here, but here are a few common ones:-
Hot flushes/night sweats
Memory and focus loss
"Brain fog" (we forget what we're doing)
Headaches
Aching muscles
These are just a few symptoms that can be reported, there are many more and up until fairly recently they have been something to suffer in silence. Now though, it has become a topic that is talked about and women are able to speak about how they feel.
Menopause is a completely natural event and there are now lots of resources and help out there.
It may be worth talking to a health professional about your symptoms and how they are affecting your life: there is no need to suffer in silence any. more.
