As OTs, we often hear: "They’re an angel at school, so why do they fall apart the second they hit the front door?"
The answer is often Masking. Masking isn't just "behaving", it is a conscious or subconscious effort to hide neurodivergent traits to fit into a neurotypical world. For a child, this means:

πŸ’  Suppressing sensory needs: Not stimming when they need to regulate.

πŸ’  Social Mimicry: Copying peers to "blend in" even when confused.

πŸ’  Hyper-vigilance: Working 10x harder than their peers just to follow instructions.

When a child feels safe at home, the mask drops. This leads to meltdowns, extreme fatigue, or "shutting down." They aren't being "difficult"; their sensory and emotional systems are simply overdrawn.

Remember: A child who is masking isn't "coping", they are surviving. πŸ’š

We look beneath the surface of behavior to support the nervous system.
You don’t have to navigate this journey alone.

A Day of Adventure and Joy: Tameside Private Occupational Therapy Takes on Gulliver's World!

What a truly fantastic day we will have today!
Here at Tameside Private Occupational Therapy, we believe in creating enriching experiences that go beyond traditional therapy rooms. And today, alongside our wonderful Social Worker, we embark on an unforgettable adventure to Gulliver's World in Warrington with a fantastic group of children!

The air will be buzzing with excitement from the moment we set off. For many of the children, a trip like this is more than just a day out; it's an opportunity to develop crucial social skills, build confidence, explore new environments, and experience the sheer joy of childhood in a vibrant, supportive setting.

Gulliver's World, with its diverse array of rides, shows, and attractions, provided the perfect backdrop for a day packed with learning and laughter. From the thrilling highs of the rollercoasters to the imaginative play in the themed areas, every turn offered a new chance for discovery. We hope to see incredible moments of bravery as children conquered new rides, wonderful teamwork as they navigated the park together, and heartwarming smiles that truly lit up the day.

Our Social Worker will play an invaluable role, offering support, encouragement, and ensuring everyone felt included and safe throughout the day. It’s this holistic approach, combining therapeutic goals with genuine fun, that makes these experiences so impactful.
Seeing the children's faces light up, hearing their infectious laughter, and watching them create precious memories made every effort worthwhile. These are the moments that truly matter, fostering independence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
A huge thank you to everyone who will be making this trip possible, our dedicated team, the amazing staff at Gulliver's World, and most importantly, the incredible children who embraced every moment with such enthusiasm.
We’re already looking forward to our next adventure!
Look out for an update later today πŸ’ͺπŸ˜€πŸ’ͺ
