🚨Parents - beware!🚨
We have received the alert below from Princess Alexandra Hospital
PROBLEM / CONCERN
The “Salt and Ice Challenge” is an online trend where young people place salt on their skin and press ice on top for as long as possible.
This creates a chemical reaction, rapidly lowering the temperature and causing cryogenic (cold) burns, similar to frostbite.
Children and young people may underestimate the harm as the cold numbs the skin, masking pain until significant damage has occurred
ED teams in North East London have already treated children for significant burns linked to this challenge. Similar surges have been reported nationally and internationally with second- or third-degree burns, potential need for skin grafts, lasting scarring, nerve damage, and impact on wellbeing. Peer and online pressure amplify the likelihood of wider uptake.
ACTION REQUIRED
Immediate First Aid Advice
Cool the affected area under lukewarm running water for at least 10 minutes.
Do not apply ice, creams, or fluffy dressings.
Cover with clean cling film or smooth plastic.
Seek medical attention for deep, blistered, or extensive burns.
Key Messages for Young People
“The Salt & Ice Challenge can leave permanent scars—don’t risk it.”
“Cold burns damage tissue, even if you can’t feel it happening.
“Don’t hurt yourself for likes—there are safer ways to have fun online.”

Dear Neighbours in Elsenham
On Saturday 26th July 2025, the GP Partners are hosting a Summer Party for our staff, in the garden at our Elsenham Branch. The last 12 months post-merger has been rather stressful 😣, and it’s a token of thanks to our amazing team.
Our event will start at 4pm, and will involve live music between 7pm and 10pm (the band will sound check before 7pm). Approximately 50 staff members will be in attendance.
We apologise in advance for the noise – we intend to finish the event at 11pm (with some tidying up to happen after 11pm, and the next morning).
We thank you for your support and understanding.
Teresa Buglass, Practice Manager - on behalf of the GP Partners

⬇️Patients - please read for some important context on the BBC article below ⬇️
To manage patient expectations and in the interest of transparency:
The ‘Advice and Guidance’ (A&G) pathway is not new. GPs have been using it for some time, when clinically appropriate.
In this year’s GMS contract, surgeries are awarded £20 per A&G referral. This fee is new.
It means that instead of a patient being referred to Secondary Care for specialist input, a ‘remote’ assessment’ is done, and the GP receiving advice and guidance back on how to manage the patient in Primary Care. Perhaps requesting more tests or initiating treatment usually started under specialist care and specialist supervision. All the follow up care therefore falls to GPs. The £20 fee does not cover this additional workload for GPs… not even almost. It is assumed that A&G responses will be written and overseen by consultants.
There is no clarity on the financial incentives received by hospitals to delay/reject referrals from GPs. Perhaps I’m being cynical.
Can GPs just bypass A&G and refer patients to hospital?
In some cases, yes - but not for long (we suspect). We believe that very soon we will be unable to make referrals to several specialities unless A&G has been sought. This is already the case for some specialties at some hospitals.
Time will tell what the effect on patient outcomes will be.
Please understand 3 things:
1. Your GP cannot just refer a patient to hospital because the patient wants a referral. Sometimes, not even if the GP believes a referral is clinically indicated.
2. If you see glowing reports in the media depicting a huge reduction in waiting lists for hospital appointments, it’s because the work as moved back into your GP Surgery. Work that we do not have capacity for.
3. There’s a cap on how many A&G referrals GP Surgeries can do… when the 80 million ‘additional’ investment runs out… presumably we return to business as usual.
Yes, the A&G service has been useful, and it will continue to be - not all patients require specialist input. But many do… and now it is becoming harder to obtain. GPs are being stripped of their autonomy to decide what is best for their patients, and patients are being removed from conversations about their own health.
GPs will work more closely with specialists to support patients closer to home, the government says.

Stansted Surgery is a modern, forward looking GP Practice, based in brand new purpose built premises - in the shadows of Mountfitchet Castle. We look after over 10 500 patients, with a boundary that stretches as far as Bishop Stortford, Ugley and Henham, Farnham, Manuden and Takeley, and everywhere in between.
Our team consists of:
4 GP Partners, 1 salaried GP, 2 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, 2 Practice Nurses, 2 Healthcare Assistants, a phlebotomist, and a reception and administration team.
We look after the residents in 4 local care homes.
We are engaged in medical research, and is a training practice to medical students from Cambridge University.
We also offer work experience to GCSE and Sixth Form students, as we are passionate about inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals.
In our local community, we also have the support of a Community Matron, District Nurses, and an Emergency Care Practitioner (Paramedic).
We use our spacious premises to it’s full potential by providing room to support services, such as Citizen’s Advise Bureau, the Drug and Alcohol Service, Healthy Minds, and Lifestyle Services.
We also work with the Voluntary Sector - to navigate patients in the right direction for non-medical matters - via the Community Builder Scheme (patients over 65) and the Care Navigator Partnership (patients aged 16 to 64).
Just like other GP surgeries, and hospitals, we work under tremendous pressure, but we always aim to provide the best possible service to our patients.
