FYI
Someone recently asked me what happens on an MBCT course. Here was my answer:
"To be honest it's quite difficult to describe what the course is 'really' about because it is about changing the way that we relate to difficulties and I am unable to tell you about what that 'change' is. I can only SHOW you what this 'change' is through the journey of the course.
This 'change' is not about 'relaxation' though that is often a side effect. Many people teach mindfulness as a form of relaxation and they are 'doing it wrong' ☹️
This 8 week course entails us meeting weekly for 135 minute groups. There is also a whole day of practicing mindfulness towards the end of the course.
From the beginning, we receive mp3s or CDs and start doing daily 40 minute exercises at home that involve us working with our relationship with our body using MP3 recordings or the CDs daily. After this, towards the second half of the course, we do exercises that work more with emotions and thoughts.
During the group when we do these exercises, my job is to facilitate us noticing how we get 'entangled' up between these different aspects of experience; eg body sensations, feelings (& emotions), perceptions and thoughts and how this can make matters worst.
I also include exercises from cognitive science (cognitive therapy) and we, as a group, gradually learn to integrate this learning into our daily lives."
