Those who know me well know that one of my main goals in life is to be a strong and fit older lady.

Many of our patients inspire me. We have some amazing octogenarians who we see.

This lady is not a patient but is one of my gym friends. She’s happy for me to post this as I’m always telling her how much she inspires me.

I saw her doing this exercise this morning- look how strong she looks. She’s 85 years old! 😮 She’s doing the exercise with 9kg weight (she wanted me to tell you that 🤩).

I love seeing older ladies doing strength training. She’s incredible and I really aspire to be like her in about 30 years time!

But please remember - you don’t have to do this at the gym. There are plenty of ways to strength train. If this is something you want help and guidance on, we can help you.

Well done 👏🏻

Yesterday I joined other sponsors and members of the Menzies Stevenage 10K Committee to present our other chosen charity with a cheque for £3000!
This money will make a huge difference to this small, local charity.

Choice Pregnancy Advice Centre are based in Letchworth and offer free pregnancy testing, unplanned pregnancy information, post abortion support and miscarriage support. A very worthy charity, I’m sure you’ll agree.

It was great to meet the team and learn about some of the valuable work they do.

They did it!

There were definitely times when these two didn’t think they’d make it to the start line of the New York marathon and now they’ve completed it 🥳

Congratulations all of you! Now time to rest and recover.

One of our running vests has made it to Central Park and Times Square in New York!

Good luck to husband and wife Alison and Paul who are running the New York marathon today with their daughter.

Both of them have had injuries to manage whilst training and we have got them to the start line with some excellent collaborative working;

The golden triad of good physio, good personal trainer and good sports massage has come together and we are so excited to see how these two Spartans do today.

Both Alison and Paul see Georgie Hooper for Personal Training and also see Suzy Hawkins regularly for sports massage (website for both in comments).

I have known Suzy and Georgie for years and we have always respected each other professionally and work well together. This is collaborative working at its best - professionals discussing and planning what’s best for the client between them so that they get the best outcome.

It’s been a pleasure working with Alison and Paul but also alongside Georgie and Suzy too.

Good luck guys! 🇺🇸 🏃‍♂️ 🏃🏻

Huge congratulations to our patient Eddie who has completed his challenge of running 5K every day in October to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

Eddie is just 16 years old and was dealing with an injury to his quadriceps muscle. He has been seeing Sam at ASK to help him with this and enable him to complete his challenge.

Well done Eddie 👏🏻 Great running and great cause!

In the last two weeks I’ve had one patient who has recently been given the ‘all clear’ from his prostate cancer and another patient who has recently been diagnosed.

If you’re a man over 50 or have a loved one who is, make sure you get your PSA checked. It’s a simple blood test and could diagnose prostate cancer when you don’t necessarily have any symptoms.

If you’d like to donate to Eddie’s fund raising page, the link is in the comments.

Sometimes life goes full circle….

Most of you know that Nicki and I studied physiotherapy together at university in the mid 90s. We were in the first ever cohort of students to do the innovative brand new course at University of Hertfordshire.

One of our five lecturers was this lovely lady, Judith. Judith taught us all the musculoskeletal aspect of the course.
She also taught Emily when she was at UH a few years later.

What an absolute honour for her then to choose ASK Physio to come to for her post op rehab following her knee replacement. She is seeing Nicki in the clinic and in hydro too.

I’m sure my fellow UH Physio 93-96 friends will agree that she hasn’t changed a bit!

What’s that phrase about the student becoming the master……?!

Thanks for letting us share this Judith, I’m sure a lot of your ex-students will be interested!

Don’t forget the clocks go back tonight.
Spring forward, fall back!

Enjoy that extra hour in bed (unless you’ve got young kids or you’re getting up early to do a duathlon 🥴).

Some people who come to hydrotherapy are worried about how they will get in the pool;

“Is it just a ladder in? because I won’t manage that”.

In our experience we find that the vast majority of people DO manage the ladder, even when they don’t think they will. We have purchased a special aqua step to put at the bottom of the ladder to reduce the ‘drop’ from the bottom rung of the ladder. We also stand behind you and can guide you down if necessary.

Many patients end up saying “oh, that wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be!” and it also gives them a mental boost that they managed the ladder 🙌🏻.

There is a hoist for those who need it. But we find that most people, even a couple of ladies in their 90s who’d had hip replacements (!) can manage.

If you have any queries regarding hydro then please contact us.

Hydrotherapy can also be very beneficial for ankle injuries. This could be post fracture or post surgery.

Sam broke his ankle back in 2022 (this is an old photo) and attended hydrotherapy as part of his rehabilitation.

Hydrotherapy is great in the early stages of lower limb fractures/broken bones, as the patient has the joy of walking in the pool unaided and not using their crutches for a while.

The pool at David Lloyd is 1.2 metres deep for the whole length. This means that depending on your height, you’re only weight bearing approximately 30% of your body weight. Which means that even if you’re partial weight bearing, you can still come in and enjoy the benefits of hydrotherapy.

Share this post with anyone who has an ankle injury who may benefit from hydrotherapy.

Did you know we also offer hydrotherapy in small groups? This is a more affordable option if like these ladies you want to attend hydrotherapy for many years! These ladies have been in the same group on a Wednesday morning for many years, two of them for over ten years.

Long term health conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia can be managed well with regular exercise in water.

All information on the groups is on our new website along with prices.
