Knee pain - what’s causing it and what can we do to reduce it?? 🤔

Knee pain can be particularly frustrating as it tends to really affect day to day life whether you are an active person or not!

Often it is caused by some sort of trauma to the knee, possibly a sporting injury, or can gradually develop over time.

When you come in the clinic, our main aim is to get to the bottom of what is causing it or what structure is injured - quite often we can get a good idea from just chatting through how your symptoms presented, but knees need a thorough assessment to really get to the source as well.

We will assess your functional movements, range of movement, power, ligament integrity, meniscus, patellofemoral joint and fully palpate the joint and surrounding tissues. It’s also always useful to check the joints above and below.

Once we have your diagnosis we can then put a rehab plan in place for you as well as some hands on treatment within the session. This may include massage, electrotherapy, taping, gentle joint mobilisations etc.

❔❔ Can I still exercise? ❔❔

This is probably one of the most common questions I get asked, especially during initial assessments, and I would say 99% of the time it’s always a YES!

My general rule of thumb is any form of exercise which is not bringing on your pain or aggravating your symptoms is completely safe to do! 💯

We usually have a chat around making adjustments to your preferred way of exercising if it is causing pain - we can always modify what you’re doing so you are still able to do some form of exercise, aiming to fully return to sport!

If we’re talking about the specific rehab exercises I give you - there are times where we do want to push into a little pain but I will always guide you through what’s safe and what’s not 👍🏼

Despite the long standing debate over whether manual therapy has it’s place in physiotherapy treatment, I will continue to provide in clinic hands on treatment for my clients and here’s the why:
