TRAPPED NERVE VS TRIGGER POINT

Let’s clear this one up — because these two love to get mistaken for each other.

You know the feeling… that sharp, nagging, burning pain that makes you think you’ve “got a trapped nerve.”

Or maybe wee Mary told you she had one once and now you’re convinced that’s exactly what it is 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

But here’s the truth

A TRAPPED NERVE

→ Happens when a nerve gets compressed or irritated — often by tight muscles, swollen tissue, or misalignment in the body.
→ Can cause sharp, radiating, shooting pain, tingling, or numbness that follows a nerve pathway (think down the arm or leg).

A TRIGGER POINT

→ Is a tight, hyper-irritable knot within a muscle.
→ Can cause dull, aching pain and even refer pain elsewhere — so it can feel just like nerve pain.
→ Usually caused by overload, stress, or imbalance.

Here’s the twist …

You can actually experience both at the same time.
They can mimic each other, overlap, and drive you mad — all while making you guess what’s really going on.
Now, massage can absolutely help relieve a trigger point by loosening the muscle and easing pain.
But if your body is out of alignment, that muscle tightness (and nerve irritation) will keep coming back.

That’s where Kinetic Chain Release (KCR) comes in 💫
It works to realign and reset your entire body, so everything supports itself properly — addressing the root cause, not just the symptom.
Because sometimes it’s not just “that one muscle”… it’s the chain reaction happening throughout your whole body.
So whether it’s a trapped nerve, a trigger point, or a bit of both — let’s get to the source and fix it properly.

SCIATICA VS PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME
If I had £1 for every client who’s told me “I’ve got sciatica” because they’ve got pain in the back of their leg… I’d be retired somewhere in the Maldives by now 🤣🌴

Or my personal favourite — wee Mary who had it once, told you to take a painkiller and roll on a tennis ball 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

Let’s set the record straight

🔷 SCIATICA
Is caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself, often starting in the lower back (like from a disc, bone spur, or spinal misalignment).
Pain can shoot from your lower back down your glutes, hamstrings, and even into your calf or foot.
It’s nerve-related, so you might also feel tingling, numbness, or weakness.

🔷 PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME
Happens when the piriformis muscle (a small muscle deep in your glutes) gets tight or overworked and compresses the sciatic nerve underneath it.
The pain feels very similar — deep in the bum, sometimes radiating down the leg — which is why everyone swears it’s “sciatica.”
But it’s actually a muscle issue, not a nerve root issue.
So, what’s the difference?
Sciatica starts from the spine.
Piriformis syndrome starts from the glutes.
Both can make sitting, walking, and existing feel like a mission — but they need totally different treatment approaches.

Here’s the good news …

Both can be worked on — and that’s where Kinetic Chain Release (KCR) comes in.

It helps to realign and rebalance your entire body, easing pressure on the lower back and hips while helping the muscles and nervous system reset.

Because sometimes it’s not just the piriformis or the back, it’s the whole chain that’s out of sync.
So next time you’re tempted to diagnose yourself or listen to wee Mary’s “tennis ball therapy”… maybe get checked properly first 💁🏽‍♀️

Book your KCR session or sports therapy treatment — let’s find out what’s really going on.

06/11/2025

Trigger points in the gluteal muscles (especially the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, and piriformis) can mimic sciatica by referring pain down the leg in a very similar pattern to true sciatic nerve irritation.
Here’s how it works

Key Muscles Involved

🔷 Gluteus Minimus
Trigger points here often refer pain down the back or side of the leg, sometimes all the way to the calf or ankle. This pain can feel sharp, tingling, or burning, just like sciatica.

🔷 Piriformis
This small deep muscle sits right over the sciatic nerve.
When tight or containing trigger points, it can compress the sciatic nerve — a condition known as piriformis syndrome.
Pain can radiate from the buttock down the back of the thigh.

🔷 Gluteus Medius
Trigger points here tend to refer pain to the outer hip, lower back, and occasionally down the leg.

The pain is usually dull or aching but can still mimic nerve pain.
Trigger points in the gluteus minimus can mimic sciatica, and this situation is largely unknown to medicine.

My client was experiencing “sciatica” and had been scanned for lumbar disc bulging, but it was negative. Then they looked at the piriformis and that was normal as well. Pretty much they gave up on him.
Then he came to me for treatment 🙌🏽
After KCR, trigger point therapy, and releasing the glutes - the sciatica disappeared.
Don’t suffer in pain , get booked in and let my healing hands resolve your aches and pains.

🤸‍♀️ LET’S TALK STRETCHING 🤸‍♂️

Everyone says, “you just need to stretch more” — but let’s clear something up.
Stretching absolutely has its place, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to keeping your body moving well and pain-free.

Here’s what stretching does for you

🔷 Improves flexibility and mobility.
🔷 Helps increase blood flow and oxygen to your muscles.
🔷 Reduces muscle tension and promotes relaxation.
🔷 Can enhance performance and recovery when done correctly.

But here’s the part most people don’t realise …
🚫 A tight muscle and an overstretched muscle can actually feel the same.

That “tight” feeling you’re trying to stretch out might not mean the muscle needs more length — it could mean it needs stability or activation.

Overstretching can actually create more instability, leading to weaker movement patterns, more tension, and even pain.
The reality

Stretching helps — but it only takes you so far.

To truly release tension, restore balance, and optimise performance, your body often needs hands-on work like sports massage, deep tissue, or Kinetic Chain Release.

Think of stretching as your daily maintenance, and bodywork as your essential tune-up.

Do both, and your body will thank you.

Book your appointment online and let’s get your body moving — the right way.

WHY EVERY HYROX ATHLETE SHOULD BE GETTING KCR

Hyrox demands it all — strength, endurance, speed, and precision under pressure. Every rep, every run, every sled push depends on your body working as one powerful, balanced chain.

But with the intensity of training and competition, imbalances build up fast.

That’s where Kinetic Chain Release (KCR) comes in.

What KCR does for HYROX athlete

🔷 Rebalances the body from head to toe — improving posture, alignment, and movement efficiency.
🔷 Frees up tight hips, shoulders, and lower back — essential for running, lifting, and functional movement flow.
🔷 Enhances power output, speed, and coordination — helping you move smoother and stronger through every station.
🔷 Reduces fatigue and muscle tension — keeping you performing at your peak for longer.
🔷 Prevents overuse injuries by addressing the root cause of imbalance — not just the symptoms.
How it supports your body systems
🔷 Improves respiratory function — freeing the ribcage and diaphragm for deeper, more efficient breathing during endurance work.
🔷 Boosts circulation and lymphatic flow — promoting faster recovery and reduced inflammation after intense training.
🔷 Calms and resets the nervous system — enhancing focus, reaction speed, and recovery between high-intensity efforts.

When your kinetic chain is aligned, your performance becomes effortless and efficient.

That means better times, stronger lifts, faster transitions, and quicker recovery.

If you’re serious about levelling up your HYROX performance, preventing injury, and staying race-ready — this is your edge.

Book your KCR session online and find out how it will support your training, performance, and recovery cycle.
