Many women over 50 are unhappy with their tummies! Comments such as “No matter what I do I just can’t get rid of the thickness in my waist” or “I am doing everything right and I just seem to be putting on weight.” While these are very valid complaints did you realise that belly fat or abdominal adiposity is a lot more serious than just a cosmetic issue?

Having a large tummy has been linked to metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, stroke, inflammation, increase cholesterol, osteoporosis, sarcopenia and even dementia.

Metabolic syndrome in turn has been linked to inflammation. Epidemiological studies, which look at rates of dis ease in populations, find that people who eat diets high in certain foods—fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fatty fish, nuts, and healthy oils (essentially the Mediterranean diet)—have lower rates of chronic conditions such as heart disease and cancer.
